Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s theme was “books I’d give different titles to”, which I love as a theme, but my creativity bank has been just about EMPTY lately, folks! I had plans originally to theme every October T10T to horror books and films, but sadly, I missed T10T altogether the last few weeks. Since I finally had the spoons to write up a list this week, I decided to talk about ten spooky reads on my TBR! Maybe these will inspire those of you who are looking for some new spooky reads, too!
1. Remains — Andrew Cull
spooky themes:
grief, murder, haunted house, mental illness ← and one of my favorite horror authors!
2. Better Watch Out — Willow Rose
spooky themes:
Christmas horror, scary Santa, short story, kindle unlimited ← I love a good Christmas scare!
3. Children of the Dark — Jonathan Janz
spooky themes:
serial killers, ancient evil, coming-of-age horror, monsters/creatures, high body counts ← my favorite horror author; I can’t recommend Jonathan’s work highly enough!
4. We Live Inside Your Eyes — Kealan Patrick Burke
spooky themes:
short story collection, old gods, creepy kids ← another favorite horror author of mine, Kealan’s short story collections are pure genius every time.
5. Off Season — Jack Ketchum
spooky themes:
cannibalism, isolated cabins, graphic gore, kindle unlimited, did I mention cannibalism? ← after The Girl Next Door, I swore off Ketchum for a while, but everyone tells me this is a MUST-READ if you like extreme horror!
6. Pretty Marys All in a Row — Gwendolyn Kiste
spooky themes:
urban legends, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, infamous “Mary”s, kindle unlimited ← I love anything that involves twisted nursery rhymes and urban legends!
7. Pretty Girls — Karin Slaughter
spooky themes:
missing girls, shocking twists, explicit violence ← a thriller, not horror, but I’m told it’s pretty shockingly eerie and dark nonetheless…
8. How Much To…? — Matt Shaw
spooky themes:
horror “games”/competitions, extreme violence/gore, kindle unlimited ← I dunno if anyone else can relate, but sometimes, I’m just in the mood for something as gross and dark as possible, and the reviews make it sound like this fits that description pretty well!
9. The Deep — Alma Katsu
spooky themes:
historical horror, ghosts, haunted ships, Titanic ← Titanic-themed horror?! How could I NOT be all about this?
10. Echoes: The Saga Anthology of Ghost Stories — edited by Ellen Datlow
spooky themes:
anthologies, ghost stories, tons of bestselling authors ← 800+ pages of my favorite horror theme: ghost stories? HELL. YES. And it includes some of my faves like Seanan McGuire and Nathan Ballingrud!
Did any of these spooky reads catch your eye, or have you read any of them? Let me know in the comments — or suggest a spooky read for ME to add to MY TBR!
