* Book Beginnings is a meme hosted by Rose City Reader, where every Friday, bloggers post the first sentence (or few sentences) of their current read, as well as their first impressions of the book! *
This week, I’ll be highlighting one of my current reads, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.
Blue Sargent had forgotten how many times she’d been told that she would kill her true love.
I’m not gonna lie – that was a pretty solid first sentence of a book. The prologue goes on to explain that Blue’s family deals in psychic predictions, and her family members have foretold, her entire life, that Blue is doomed to kill her true love.
I’m a little over 1/4 of the way through The Raven Boys right now, and I’m really enjoying it! My first impression is that Maggie’s writing is just vague enough to add an element of genuine suspense from the very beginning. Her characters seem flawed yet lovable, and the premise of the book is incredibly intriguing. I didn’t really know what to expect when beginning this series, but I’m glad I picked the book up, and I’m eager to continue it. I already get the feeling that, by the time I finish, The Raven Boys, I’ll be itching to order the rest of the series right away.
