Diversity Spotlight Thursday #1

August 3, 2017

It’s time to introduce a new meme! I wanted to change things up a little bit, so I asked my twitter followers to vote: start a new meme, or keep Book Beginnings Fridays? The vote was almost overwhelmingly in favor of Diversity Spotlight Thursday, so we here we are! The goal is to take a moment every Thursday to highlight 3 diverse books: one from your TBR, one you read and enjoyed, and one that’s not yet released!

I want to give you guys an idea of the rep each book offers, but with books that are still on my TBR, I’ll have to make the best educated guesses I can. If I ever make an error or miss something, please let me know in a comment so I can fix it right away! Also, while I will try my best, I obviously cannot guarantee that any books listed for my “TBR picks” will be without problems, so please proceed with discretion!

1. TBR pick:

It’s Not Like It’s a Secret – Misa Sugiura

Sixteen-year-old Sana is closeted until her family moves to California and she falls for Jamie, a beautiful girl whose presence in Sana’s life encourages her to come out.

Reps: lesbian, Asian, Mexican

2. Book you enjoyed:

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda – Becky Albertalli

This one came to mind pretty easily, because I just posted a review of it yesterday! If you read that review, you already know that I didn’t find this book to be nearly as powerful as many of my blogging friends did, but I did think it was a cute and fluffy coming-out story that is definitely worth picking up if you enjoy the YA contemporary genre.

Reps: gay, bi, black

3. Unreleased title:

They Both Die at the End – Adam Silvera

Technically, this one could’ve gone for #2 or #3 – it’s not out yet, but I was lucky enough to get an ARC and loved it! I’ll have a review up for you guys very soon. It’s essentially about two teen boys that spend the final day of their lives together, and shenanigans ensue.

Reps: gay, bi, Puerto Rican, Cuban
