The “NOPE” Tag

September 6, 2017

I wasn’t tagged in this one, but I did steal it from Elise and Casey! I apologize in advance, as I’m writing this at nearly 4am and am feeling rather salty, so I should preface this tag by saying it isn’t my intention to offend ANYONE and I fully respect all of you, even if your opinions are vastly different from the ones I’m about to dive into.

NOPE. ending: a book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage, or simply because the ending was crappy.

One hundred freaking percent The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski. You can see my review here, in which I basically ranted about the fact that this book was beautiful and whimsical and fun and I loved it until that goddamn ending.

NOPE. protagonist: a main character you dislike and drives you crazy.

The MC from Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman. I swear to god that 90% of the positive reviews I’ve seen for this book have raved about how badass they thought she was, and I’m just honestly over here like… did we read the same book or…? Because I wanted to reach into my damn kindle and slap her throughout the entire story. Rant here!

NOPE. series: a series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it (or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore).

The Divergent trilogy. I don’t have enough time to fully convey to you all just how much I hated the ending of that series. It infuriated me enough that someone would have to pay me really good money to convince me to ever read another book by Veronica Roth.

NOPE. pairing: a “ship” you don’t support.

Lucien/Elain. Nope nope nope nope nope. I love Lucien so much, and it’s because of my love for him that I feel he deserves someone better than Elain (because she is legitimately my least favorite in the entire ACOTAR series thus far, other than maybe Hybern?). Also, their whole bond just skeeves me out a little.

Also, Ron/Hermione. HARRY/HERMIONE FOR LIFE.

NOPE. plot twist: a twist you didn’t see coming and didn’t like.

Besides the Divergent trilogy, which I’ve already ranted about, I can’t think of any plot twists off the top of my head that just totally enraged me.

NOPE. protagonist decision: a character decision that made you shake your head.

Literally every single thing that El from The Waking Land by Callie Bates does. I mean… if you have a few hours to spare, and somehow haven’t read my ridiculous rant on that book yet, here you go.

NOPE. genre: a genre you will never read.

Adult contemporary fiction. I’m talking Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, etc. I have tried and I just hate it all so much.

NOPE. book format: book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.

I guess mass market paperbacks? I don’t buy them anymore because they hurt my wrists (and eyesight, with the tiny font).

NOPE. trope: a trope that makes you go NOPE.

MCs making nonstop terrible decisions because they refuse to communicate with LITERALLY ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE BOOK.

NOPE. recommendation: a book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven. Or anything else by Jennifer Niven. Or anything by Veronica Roth.

NOPE. cliche: a cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.

Insta-love, I guess? I overlook it on rare occasions when I just really genuinely enjoyed the book otherwise, but for the most part, it’s a bit of a deal-breaker. I’m not asking for some huuuuge slow burn romance, but FFS, seeing a girl through your haunted mirror and then having a wet dream about her does NOT equal lifelong partnership (lookin’ at you, House of Ash).

NOPE. love interest: the love interest that’s not worthy of being one.

Beatris/Tris Prior. Even before the ending of that trilogy made me a bitter, angry old woman, I hated her as a love interest for Four. He was such a decent character and she was just such garbage girlfriend material throughout the entire second book.

NOPE. book: a book that shouldn’t have existed.

Paperweight by Meg Haston. It’s so triggering and portrays such a bad view of eating disorders and I just hate it and it makes me pull on my angry pants every time I think about it.

NOPE. villain: a villain you would hate to cross.

Umbridge. I feel like five minutes in the same room as her would make anyone anticipate the sweet release of death’s cold embrace.

NOPE. death: a character death that still haunts you.

There are so many, but I don’t want to spoil for anyone… so, I’ll just say THAT ONE DEATH from Royal Bastards. I swear I went into shock for a moment when it happened. I kept expecting it to be fake, and it wasn’t, and I still ache when I think about it.

NOPE. author: an author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.

Veronica Roth, Jennifer Niven, probably John Green.

    1. Great tag! Also, I share your views on Divergent series. It was…well, terrible. I still have the books hidden somewhere in my bookshelves but so that they are not on display 🙂

        1. i have a friend who is very strict with books so if it’s necessary, I have someone to complain to in RL. but it’s also good to have ppl on here to complain to ??

    1. Where do you find those awesome tags?? 😀 I will so steal this again hahaha

I hate it when characters don’t communicate and this leads to drama.. I feel like it’s lazy writing and to me it just doesn’t make sense.

    1. I LOVE THIS the righteous fury of this post is fueling me

    1. OMG HAUNTED MIRROR INSTALOVE XD I am dying that is epic insta love, does it make me a bad person to want to read it just for the haunted mirror love because that sounds hilarious! The ending of Divergent is such a deal breaker like why the fuck did I just spend 3 years of my life following this series for it to end like that, it just ruins everything for me (although I did enjoy the rest of the books when I read them).
This tag is so much fun I’m glad you decided to do it coz I loved your answers XD

      1. I literally cracked up reading your comment because I was wondering if anyone would say anything about that answer LMAO. I mean, it was a fun read otherwise, but holy hell, I am not kidding about the insta-love! And yesss, exactly! When people tell me I’m too salty about that series, and then they tell me, “Oh, I read all three of them back to back earlier this year…” NO GIRL. NO. If you didn’t invest YEARS of your life into this series, you do not get to tell me I’m overreacting! lmao!

    1. this is an awesome tag! i totally want to do this next week for tag tuesday! also i feEL PERSONALLY VICTIMIZED THAT YOU LIKE HARRY/HERMIONE INSTEAD OF RON/HERMIONE but i still love you

    1. Aw. I’m sorry that you don’t like Nicholas Sparks or Jodi Picoult. I kind of grew up with them, so they have a very special place in my heart.
I’m kind of worried about what you said about the Divergent series. I have two of them and am in the process of getting the first one. I hope I didn’t waste my money. Good thing they were only $1.50 a piece. lol.
I dunno if I support Harry and Hermione together but I sure as hell don’t support Ron and Hermione together. Personally, I will always support the Draco/Hermione ship. 😉

Good post! 😀 Looks like a lot of fun!

Say hello! ♥
