Miniature Monday #6

October 16, 2017

Sorry I’ve been absent a lot this weekend, and probably won’t be on today, either! Today is my 25th birthday and I’m spending it with family, but I’ll definitely be back online tomorrow to respond to comments. <3

Every Monday, I’ll be posting a small batch of mini-reviews for graphic novels, comics, poetry collections, short stories, and other miscellaneous items that may be too short for a full-length review post. This week, I’ll be reviewing three graphic novels and one illustrated nonfiction book.

Fables, Vol 2: Animal Farm – Bill Willingham

167010

In this issue of Fables, Snow White and Rose Red take a trip upstate to the Animal Farm to check on the non-human-passing Fables. Upon arriving, they find that Weyland Smith has gone missing, and two of the pigs have taken over the farm in leading an uprising revolution to take back the Homelands.

This volume was a lot more dramatic than the first, and I really enjoyed seeing the Farm and the less human Fables! As usual, the artwork is beautiful and the plot was fully fleshed out within the confines of this one issue, which is a method I love in a graphic novel/comic book series.

Saga, Vol 5 – Brian K. Vaughan

25451555

I wasn’t wild about Volume 4 and strongly considered not continuing the series, but I already had Volume 5 from the library, so I figured I might as well give it one more volume, and I’m glad I did! This volume was much better than #4. It was action-packed and I really loved the shifting perspectives between Marko and Alana’s respective journeys. Alana redeemed herself for her ridiculousness in Vol 4, and Marko learned how to move past his violent tendencies. This volume was so endearing as far as Marko, Alana, and Hazel go, and it made me want so badly for them to have a happy ending (though I somehow doubt that will happen).

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol 2: Fandemonium – Kieron Gillen

24666002

I honestly had such a hard time picking a star rating for this one, because something about this graphic novel series is simultaneously intriguing and really… frustrating and boring. So much happens, yet there’s no attachment to any of the characters, so it’s hard to careabout most of the events. I will admit, though, that the ending caught me, and I’ll probably pick up Volume 3 just to see where the story goes next.

The Creeps – Fran Krause

33897635

The Creeps, in a nutshell, is an illustrated compilation of user-submitted fears, put into an artistic format. Fran takes users’ fears and puts them into these little panels that are so easy to relate to, it’s ridiculous. I couldn’t help but laugh at a few of them because they just sounded so familiar! Meanwhile, there were some that surprised even me – either because they were so far-fetched I couldn’t help but smile, or because they were so understandable that it made me wonder why it had never crossed my mind. The art is cutesy and watercolor-esque, and I just think this would be such a fun, slightly spooky read for anyone who enjoys comics or graphic novels.

I was lucky enough – and very grateful – to be provided with an eARC of this from NetGalley and Ten Speed Press, as well as a beautiful finished copy from Blogging For Books, in exchange for an honest review!

    1. SEE. I TOLD YOU I’D FORGET.
[Not to mention that yesterday was the most shittiest day in a long time for me so.. I’m taking that as my excuse.]

      Aaaanyway: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!
Saw your Instagram-stories; you had me drooling over those books, haha!

Hope you enjoyed your birthday and had loads of fun! 🙂

As for the actual post: I’ll need to keep an eye on them once I finish Death Note. Maybe I’ll find something I like more and read more manga. 😀

        1. It has! FairyLoot saved the week, HA. That and the day of teambuilding was pretty kick-ass [couple of hours in a virtual reality shooting ugly bastards with bow and arrow. Yes please!]
You have every right to have been garbage at that this week, haha. Hope you’ve enjoyed all birthday activities and presents and stuff! 😀

Say hello! ♥
