T10T: Books With Yummy Foods (Cookbooks!)

October 17, 2017

This is a weekly tag hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and this week’s challenge is to pick ten books with yummy foods – whether it’s a fictional story in which the characters have lots of tasty treats, or a cookbook that you love pulling recipes from! I’ll be honest, I don’t have 10 cookbooks to share with you guys today, but I do have a few beloved ones that I thought I’d link you to!

I’m using a new formatting for my list posts: you can now click on the book covers to be taken to each one’s Goodreads listing!

1. World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook

No joke – the WOW cookbook is my all-time favorite cookbook in life. My mother got my fiance a copy of this one for Christmas last year, and we have cooked probably half of the recipes in it so far (by “we”, I mostly mean “he”, because he is a national treasure and he loves to cook delicious yummies for us). A few of our favorites from the book are the Steaming Chicken Soup, Dalaran Brownies, Mulgore Spice Bread, Hearthglen Ambrosia, and Sweet Potato Bread.

By the way, if you decide to pick this one up, I highly recommend splurging on the physical copy rather than an ebook – it comes in the most stunning hardcover edition with beautiful, glossy photos.

2. A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook

This one is a fairly new addition to our home, but damn, have we found some yummy treats in it already! My personal favorite so far has been the lemon cake recipe (which I actually requested for my early birthday dessert this past weekend!). What’s really neat about this cookbook is that, for each recipe, there are 2 variants: a GOT/middle ages version, and a modernized uptake!

3. The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book: Real Recipes for Joke Burgers

Full disclosure: I actually pre-ordered this cookbook, so we’ve had it sitting around the house for over a year and a half, but we’ve still hardly used it. We just don’t cook burgers very often. That said, this cookbook is – no, seriously – HILARIOUS. If you enjoy the television show, you will love the puns and references in the recipes. If you enjoy the show and cooking burgers, well… what are you waiting for, anyways?

4. EveryDayCook

We have a running joke in our house that Alton Brown is the literal god of food on earth, and by “joke”, I essentially mean “religious beliefs that must be upheld at all costs”. One of the first things that my fiance and I bonded over was a mutual obsession with Alton Brown and the old Good Eats show, so when AB announced that he was putting out a cookbook of recipes he actually eats frequently in his own home, we pre-ordered that shit real quick. My favorite thing about this cookbook isn’t even the recipes, though – it’s how educational it is. True to Alton’s typical ways, if you’re a fan of his, you already know the man can’t go five minutes without turning something into a science lesson or learning experience, and that’s true with this book, too.

5, 6, 7. Thug Kitchen

I’m cheating a little with these, because I don’t actually own them yet, but I’ve been wanting to purchase them. These cookbooks are filled with profanity, sarcasm, and downright rudeness, so proceed with caution if you’re easily bothered by that sort of thing, but I flipped through them a bit in a bookstore recently and absolutely laughed my ass off. Plus, I think all three of them have strictly vegan recipes, and while we aren’t vegan, we have been wanting to find ways to incorporate more healthy foods into our diet. I just learned that BookOutlet has all 3 of these in stock, so I think I’ll grab one in my next order!

That’s all I’ve got for today, but let me know in the comments – do you have any favorite cookbooks?

    1. Oh world of warcraft has a cooking book? I never knew this. I don’t play anymore but that is interesting, haha.

    1. I own the GoT cookbook as well & love it! Although more for looking at it haha xD i’ve made the mulled wine & one of the soups. Should pick it up more often though and cook more from it! Lemon tarts should be good 🙂

      1. YES! It’s such a good comfort watch. I also love Cutthroat Kitchen when I’m not feeling well. Especially if I’m just having a bad mental health day – nothing beats curling up with a treat and some AB cooking shows lmao.

Fun little story for you – when my son was like, six months old, he went through a fussy phase, and we found out on accident one day that he LOVED Alton. As soon as any of AB’s shows came on, he would just become totally chill. It was the weirdest thing! He’s 16 months now and he still dances to the Good Eats song, haha!

    1. Oh, I love your take on this topic! And while I enjoyed the GoT and HP and Discworld cookbooks, I didn’t know about the WoW one – the thought of it reminds of the manga Delicious in Dungeon 😀

    1. The only cookbooks I have are those for my.. cupcakes? And even then, I mostly look up the recipes on the internet because that’s just way easier to find something to my liking.. or something..

The GoT-one does sound interesting though!
And I haven’t heard of Alton Brown so I might check that out.
*Don’t shoot me; I’m guessing it’s because I live in Belgium?!*

      1. Mmmmmmmmmmm, cupcakes. I freaking LOVE cupcakes lmao. I usually look up recipes online, too, but my fiance loves having physical cookbooks, and I’ve gotten used to liking having them around now! I’m much more likely to pick up a random recipe from a cookbook than I am online, I’ve learned.

Oooh, yes, he’s probably not super well known outside of north america! Well, if you enjoy geeky science-y things and food, totally look up his show “Good Eats” on youtube or something! He turns everything into a science experiment or lesson. The show has a very late 90s/early 00s feel to it unless you watch super recent episodes, but it’s very entertaining! He’s really snarky and dry, lol.

        1. It’s been a while since I’ve made them.. I should bake some sometime soon, haha. People at work also love them since I sometimes don’t even get the change to eat one myself. :’)
I just like the fact that there are so many recipes for the same thing online. If I don’t have a certain something, I can just look for a recipe without that ingredient – be lazy and not go to the store, yay! :’)

Hm. I think he wouldn’t be my cup of tea. As for my boyfriend on the other hand.. Sounds like a match made in heaven. :’) I’ll pass along the message to him, haha!

      1. I need to get some of his older ones! This one is neat just because they’re everyday recipes he uses a lot. I will admit that, when I bought it, I kind of took “everyday recipes” as an assumption that they would be fairly easy/run of the mill, and that is definitely NOT the case for some of them, but it’s cool to get some insight on him. I always tell everyone I feel like it’s less of a cookbook and more of a memoir, with how much info he gives on himself in it, lol!

    1. Ooo, I have the Game of Thrones one! I haven’t made anything from it yet, though! It does look good – I really like the comparisons between how GoT characters would have made it, and how we ought to.

I also have the Harry Potter Unofficial Cookbook and the True Blood one. Both with yumminess inside (although TB is mostly mixed drinks). 🙂

You’re the only one I’ve seen on this tag featuring cookbooks. 10 points, you!

      1. Oh, man, totally check out the lemon cakes if nothing else! They’re the bomb dot com lmao.

AHHHH a mixed drink True Blood cookbook?! Okay, so, full disclosure, I’ve only read the first book and seen the first few seasons, but that sounds like something I NEED in my life. I am a total sucker for a good cocktail. And, OF COURSE I need the HP one! Adding it to my wishlist haha!

        Ooooh, SWEET! Thanks 😀

    1. I’ve never seen A Feast of Ice and Fire before but I have seen another GOT cookbook that mainly focuses on desserts and cakes called Game of Scones. I’m not much of a cookbook person because I get a lot of recipes from online but that doesn’t stop me from looking at them every once in a while 🙂

    1. I LOVE cookbooks with big gorgeous photos, and that WoW one sounds awwwwwesssoooome. And Alton Brown IS a food god. And he’s a Whovian, so he’s awesome anyway. lol

    1. I think it’s awesome that your cookbooks are almost all fandom cookbooks!

My favorites are How To Cook Everything, which we got for our wedding 16 years ago, Betty Crocker’s Cookie Cookbook, and the spiral notebook I started jotting recipes in about 25 years ago.

      1. Hahah, I hadn’t actually noticed that, but you’re right! I’m a sucker for practical things that also fall into my fave fandoms. 🙂

Awww, nice! I have some little flash cards that I write down my recipes on but I need to get a designated little notebook or folder for them.

Say hello! ♥
