Down the TBR Hole #5

November 5, 2017

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

I decided to do 10 books per post instead of 5, otherwise we will literally never finish this meme series. EVER.

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 991 titles

Book 36:

18730154

Date added to shelf: Dec 14, 2014

I… guess I added this after watching her youtube channel? I dunno. Hannah Hart is a sweetie, but I don’t care enough about her work to read a book by her.

Book 37:

18079527

Date added to shelf: Dec 14, 2014

At some point, I feel like I probably added all of LHA’s books to my TBR just because I enjoyed Speak so much, but this book about a teen girl’s struggles with living with a veteran father suffering from PTSD just doesn’t sound that appealing anymore. When given the choice, I always feel that books should be written about individuals with mental health struggles, not about the loved ones that they are “burdens” upon. :/

Book 38:

11797285

Date added to shelf: Dec 19, 2014

Family moves into a house with a creepy basement? I’m down. Plus, it’s early 2000s Bentley, which has usually been pretty good Bentley from my experience.

The judgement: KEEP

Book 39:

155421

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

This one’s about a “detective” who investigates a shadowy realm between fantasy and reality. It’s only on my TBR because I picked up a copy while thrifting years ago, but I think it’s sat unread on my shelf long enough to justify tossing it in the donate pile.

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 40:

1194347

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

I don’t know why this is here, considering I read it multiple times as a kid. Peeking ahead, though, I doubt it’s the only Goosebumps book that belongs on my “read” shelf instead.

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 41:

679309

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

I haven’t read this one, but I sadly have outgrown any real desire to read any of the books from the Series 2000 set.

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 42:

125542

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

Ah, look – another one I’ve read way too many times as a child!

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 43:

176652

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

This is a sequel, and I don’t have nearly enough interest in it to justify tracking down the first book.

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 44:

176257

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

This was Stine’s first ever adult novel, and it got pretty horrible reviews, so… I’ll pass.

The judgement: REMOVE

Book 45:

176588

Date added to shelf: Dec 20, 2014

I actually still have a shameless love for the Fear Street series, and I don’t recall ever reading this one!

The judgement: KEEP

    1. I don’t think the book intends to portray the father with PTSD as a burden, but I think it is an important perspective to include. Mental illness affects the whole family, and I think it would be so important for children or siblings of people who have a mental health condition to see their experiences reflected in books as well and know that they are not alone.

    1. I also have a shameless devotion to Fear Street novels despite their intended audience… and the one you kept is very good!
