Down the TBR Hole #11

December 17, 2017

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 1,013 titles

BOOKS 121-125:

 13440

Skeleton Crew by Stephen King – added 12.31.14
I own this one, and we all know I’m a sucker for horror anthologies, so I want to hold on to it… but honestly, I have way too much King work to catch up on, and I’m not super excited about this collection.
DECISION: REMOVE

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris – added 12.31.14
While I do want to finish the main series, after reading a lot of reviews, I don’t actually have much interest in reading the prequel story.
DECISION: REMOVE

Books of Blood: Volume 1 by Clive Barker – added 07.28.15 (big jump!)
I’ve never read anything by Clive Barker, but I’ve heard so much good about his writing, plus one of the Books of Blood stories was the inspiration for the Hellraiser films, so…
DECISION: KEEP

The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero – added 10.09.15
This was 100% a cover purchase, and after talking to the author earlier this year and how nice he was, I really want to read this… eventually.
DECISION: KEEP

Cabin Fever by Michael Bray – added 12.29.15
This is literally a 25-page short story that’s available for free on Kindle Unlimited. No clue how I came across it two years ago, but I’m tempted to go read it right now just to add it to my reading challenge. 😛
DECISION: KEEP

BOOK 126-130:

22822857

Make Something Up by Chuck Palahniuk – added 12.29.15
Chuck’s kinda twisted, and this is an anthology of “twisted” tales from him. Every now and then, I get a craving for something that’s just downright weird, so I’ll hold on to this one until that craving rolls back around.
DECISION: KEEP

Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk – added 12.29.15
A journalist stumbles upon a section of verbiage in a popular poetry collection that holds an African death chant, so he goes on a mission to cull the copies of the book from the world. I honestly don’t even know.
DECISION: KEEP

What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler – added 12.29.15
Inspired by true events, this is a story about the incredible harm that comes about when teens choose to shame a rape victim instead of helping them. I haven’t read it yet because I’m told it’s going to break my heart.
DECISION: KEEP

Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy – added 12.29.15
I honestly didn’t have a ton of interest in this book after hearing quite a few negative reviews, but when I read Julie’s short story in Three Sides of a Heart (review) earlier this month, I was sold on her writing.
DECISION: KEEP

The Return by Bentley Little – added 12.29.15
I’m honestly, like, 98% sure I’ve read this one. I love Bentley’s writing, but a lot of his work runs together in my head… I’ll leave it for now and take a moment some time this week to skim through my copy a little and double-check.
DECISION: KEEP (for now)

BOOK 131-135:

 7923683

The Disappearance by Bentley Little – added 12.29.15
I’ve tried starting this one about disappearing people a few times, but it didn’t “catch” me like most of Bentley’s work does.
DECISION: REMOVE

The Revelation by Bentley Little – added 12.29.15
My favorites of Bentley’s stories are the ones involving weird religious cults, like this one with a psycho preacher whose appearance causes all kinds of weird shit to hit the fan.
DECISION: KEEP

His Father’s Son by Bentley Little – added 12.29.15
This one, about a man whose father seems to be suffering from insanity and has attempted to kill the man’s mother, didn’t strike me as very interesting, but reviews say it has some serious head games written into it, so I’ll try it.
DECISION: KEEP

The Troop by Nick Cutter – added 12.29.15
Oh, my word. I added this when my mom bought it for me as a Christmas gift two years ago. I let her borrow it before I picked it up, and she told me it plays a lot with one of my biggest phobias: creepy-crawlies. This is literally the only book I’ve ever come across that I’ve been too afraid to pick up… yet.
DECISION: KEEP

The Long Walk by Richard Bachman/Stephen King – added 12.29.15
One of King’s very first stories is about a group of teen boys who are forced to go on a race called “The Long Walk”, where they must walk until they drop or finish. It sounds so twisted and dark, and I’ve heard it’s, to this day, one of his best ideas.
DECISION: KEEP

 REMOVAL PERCENTAGE THIS WEEK: 20%

    1. Dumpling was awesome. I listened to it I believe and loved it. I was supposed to read What We Saw for Yule bingo but used another book instead. It’s sitting on my shelf just waiting for me to pick it up.

        1. Oh gosh, these are the kinds of comments I love to hear about books like that. I mean, it’s brutal and it hurts, but if books about topics like assault DON’T bring those emotions out, were they done well at all? You know what I mean? I know I’m gonna have to get in a good head space for that one, though, but I strongly suspect I will love the book.

    1. I also have Dumplin’ on my TBR & Ramona Blue…and probably for the same reasons, have put off actually reading the. Whelp! I decided not too long ago that I will be reading them & reviewing cause I’ve also heard really positive reviews & follow her Twitter. Something tells me I’m going to enjoy her books *fingers crossed* & mega props to you cause I am super intimidated by my Goodreads TBR shelf *hides eyes* lol! happy reading Destiny 🙂

      1. I haven’t checked out her Twitter but now that you’ve said that, I’ll totally have to! I honestly just love the idea of a plus size gal writing plus characters in a positive light. <3 I hope we both love her books! Lmao and thank you, happy reading love!

        1. I do too! I’m a plus sized gal myself & I’m SUPER stoked to see this book on publication day *insert excited emoji here* haha! happy reading 🙂
