T10T: 2017’s New-to-Me Authors

January 2, 2018

This is a weekly tag hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and this week’s challenge is Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read In 2017! I specifically opted not to pick any debut authors – these are just authors that were published pre-2017, but I didn’t check out until January 1st or later. NOTE: If any of these dates are wrong… blame Goodreads.

authors1

1. Sarah J Maas – first published in 2012
Yep, she’s on this list! I could have sworn I first read ACOTAR in 2016, but it turns out that I picked it up in the first few days of January. I know I binge-read ACOTAR and ACOMAF, pre-ordered (and waited in agony) for ACOWAR, and now I’m working on Throne of Glass to hold myself over until ACOFAS. <3

2. Ashley Herring Blake – first published in 2016
Ashley’s 2017 YA release How to Make a Wish was the 2nd physical ARC I was approved for. I devoured it and she immediately became my favorite contemporary author; after getting the chance to read an ARC of her upcoming YA release Girl Made of Stars, she has cemented herself in that spot. <3

3. Jay Kristoff – first published in 2012
I had never even heard of Jay until late 2016 (YA hiatus, remember?), but I read Illuminae in March of 2017 and immediately fell in love with his writing voice. Since then, I’ve read more of his work and followed him on social media enough to know he’s a total auto-buy author for me.

4. Leigh Bardugo – first published in 2012
This is another one that I first checked out in January of 2017, and I’m glad I did! Leigh’s writing is so interesting and fun, and I can’t wait to read a lot more by her in 2018.

5. Kiersten White – first published in 2010
I was unfamiliar with Kiersten’s writing and had heard so little about her before And I Darken that I honestly thought, at first, that it was her debut novel. Nope! She has quite a few titles under her belt, and I’m honestly surprised they haven’t been more popular, because damn, the woman can write.

6. Maggie Stiefvater – first published in 2008
I had heard of Maggie long before 2017, but I didn’t actually read anything by her until picking up The Raven Boys this past summer. Honestly… I’m pretty sure I would read her grocery lists.

7. Kerri Maniscalco – first published in 2016
I hadn’t heard of Kerri until shortly before being approved for an ARC of Hunting Prince Dracula, but I loved the first book in the series and then absolutely adored the second one. Now, I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on a copy of Escaping From Houdini…

8. Seanan McGuire – first published in 2007
How did I live so long without reading Seanan’s work under any of her names? When I first read a short story of hers in 2017, I fell in love with her writing and immediately started adding her books to my collection. <3

9. Anna-Marie McLemore – first published in 2015
Anna-Marie is another author I thought was a debut author when I first got an ARC for Wild Beauty, but I was pleasantly surprised, and have already added one of her previous releases to my shelf. <3 Her writing style is so gorgeous and romantic!

10. Samantha Shannon – first published in 2013
I was hesitant to check out The Bone Season, but ended up absolutely adoring it, and the only thing that excites me even more about her writing than continuing that series, is checking out her new one (PRIORY) whenever it releases. DRAGONS!

    1. There are so many my faves on here as well. I was late to Leigh Bardguo as well and despite reading and owing a few of Jay’s I haven’t read Illumanie yet. One I planned to get it asap this month.
My favourite discovery would probably have to be Laini Taylor or Angie Thomas

    1. I still have yet to read any of Jay Kristoff’s books even though I’ve had Stormdancer on my Kindle since the dawn of time ? I’ll definitely be making it a priority to read it this year.

    1. I absolutely adore most of these authors, but Sarah j. Maas is definitely my fave! Great post!
