Down the TBR Hole #16

February 4, 2018

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 1,065 titles

BOOKS 201-205:

1

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer – added 12.12.16
I’ve actually read most of the short stories in this collection, but I’m leaving it on my TBR shelf until I’ve finished them.
DECISION: KEEP

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo – added 12.12.16
As much as I may dislike Mal’s entire existence… I am determined to complete this trilogy some time this year.
DECISION: KEEP

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo – added 12.12.16
See previous caption. ?
DECISION: KEEP

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas – added 12.12.16
I already felt pretty confident that I would like this series, but after how much I loved The Assassin’s Blade, now I have to read the series!
DECISION: KEEP

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas – added 12.12.16
See CoM’s caption.
DECISION: KEEP

BOOK 206-210:

2

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – added 12.12.16
See CoM’s caption.
DECISION: KEEP

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas – added 12.12.16
See CoM’s caption.
DECISION: KEEP

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick – added 12.12.16
I know a lot of people love this series, but most of the reviews I’ve read make me think I missed the hype window for this one.
DECISION: REMOVE

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – added 12.12.16
I already own this book, and I still have no interest in ever reading it. It just honestly sounds so boring and… meh.
DECISION: REMOVE

The Selection by Kiera Cass – added 12.12.16
My gut honestly tells me that I won’t like this book, but a lot of my friends really loved the series, so I’ll give it a chance.
DECISION: KEEP

BOOK 211-215:

3

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – added 12.12.16
A girl whose punishment is to be executed, or become a food taster for royalty? I love books set in palaces and such, and I love political intrigue, plus I’m told that this book is more NA fantasy than YA, which I’m always here for.
DECISION: KEEP

Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger – added 12.12.16
I’m so picky about thrillers, and this one about a psychic using her powers to help find a missing girl just doesn’t strike my interest at all.
DECISION: REMOVE

The Fireman by Joe Hill – added 12.12.16
Why on earth have I not read this yet? I love Joe Hill and everything I’ve ever read by him, so I need to get moving on this!
DECISION: KEEP

What Light by Jay Asher – added 12.12.16
Earlier this year, I actually accepted that Jay Asher’s writing isn’t for me, and unhauled this book from my physical shelf.
DECISION: REMOVE

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix – added 12.12.16
This is actually really high on my TBR, especially after how much my friend Bergen has raved about Grady’s writing!
DECISION: KEEP

BOOK 216-220:

4

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – added 12.12.16
I honestly didn’t expect to make this decision so fast, but at the time that I’m compiling this post, I’m only halfway through City of Bones and I’m already certain that I’ll happily pick up every one of the Shadowhunters books.
DECISION: KEEP

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo – added 12.12.16
This one seems obvious?
DECISION: KEEP

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard – added 12.12.16
Considering I just “removed” the first book in this series…
DECISION: REMOVE

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater – added 12.12.16
I’m so scared and sad to see the end of this series, but yes, yes, yes, a million times, yes.
DECISION: KEEP

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton – added 12.12.16
I honestly felt really “meh” about this book when I first added it to my TBR, and I still feel “meh” about it.
DECISION: REMOVE

 REMOVAL PERCENTAGE THIS WEEK: 30%

That’s pretty low, after the last few weeks… whoops!

DO YOU THINK I SHOULD HAVE REMOVED (OR NOT REMOVED) ANY OF THESE TITLES? IF SO, COMMENT BELOW AND TELL ME WHY!

    1. When I was cleaning up my TBR shelf, I felt the same way about Hush, Hush. Maybe I would have liked it a few years ago, but now… *shrugs*
Also, considering which books you got through today, I think it makes sense that you have a low removal percentage. Can’t blame you when you had Maas and Bardugo up there in mass haha.

      1. Right, that’s how I’m feeling! It definitely strikes me as something that 20-year-old Destiny would have loved, but maybe not 25-year-old Destiny, ahha. 🙂 And yesss, exactly! How could I have a chance at a good percentage with all of those amazing books lol?

    1. “As much as I may dislike Mal’s entire existence…” oh my goodness, this is ME. I hated him. But Siege and Storm introduces a really good character so I encourage you to read on!:) x

      1. Bahaha thank you! It’s so nice to know someone can relate~ Oooh, that piques my interest. Is it Nikolai? I think that’s his name? I keep hearing great things about that guy, whoever he is, lmao.

    1. I think maybe keep rebel of the sands, I adored that book. ^_^ I totally support your decision to remove the red queen series though! I liked the first okay, not so much the second, and could barely finish the third book.

    1. continuing the grisha trilogy??? you are stronger than i. same goes for throne of glass. and just life, generally.

      1. LMAO. I loved The Assassin’s Blade, so that one was easy, but Shadow and Bone… man. I love that book except for Mal, so it might be tough to finish, but I’m so determined!

    1. AS IF you could ever remove the Throne of Glass-series! That’s a big no-no!
As for the Hush,Hush-series. I remember reading those ages ago and I loved Patch. I still have the books so I might do a reread and see how.. grown up I’ve gotten? :’)
[Just blame the low removal percentage on the ToG-series. It’s true; you simply cannot remove those.]

        1. Yeah, Hush Hush is okay if you’re 12 and don’t understand what a healthy and stable relationship is (think, Twilight but with Angels) but, I really don’t think it’s worth it.

Say hello! ♥
