Down the TBR Hole #24

April 8, 2018

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 1,010 titles

I didn’t hear any complaints last week about the new graphics or upping this thing to 30 titles per week, so… allons-y!

BOOKS 371-375:

1

Beautiful Broken Girls by Kim Savage – added 02.22.17
I thought this book could’ve been an interesting take on rape culture and suicide, but a lot of reviewers said it has very heavy religious tones, which is a turn-off for me.removeflower

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett – added 02.23.17
I actually received this for my birthday last year, and still think it sounds really good!
keepflower

Embrace by Jessica Shirvington – added 02.27.17
I cannot for the life of me remember who recommended this, but I know that they made it sound really good at the time, and it sounds like the kind of paranormal fantasy I need for a quick, fun read sometimes.
keepflower

The Faerie Guardian by Rachel Morgan – added 02.27.17
For every cheesy, trope-y paranormal fantasy title I keep, I feel like I gotta remove at least four. Bye~removeflower

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White – added 02.27.17
Kiersten herself has said on her twitter account that fans of The Conquerors Saga probably won’t enjoy Paranormalcy, and vice versa, but I own a copy of this and really want to find out for myself some time!

BOOKS 376-380:

2

The Rose & the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh – added 03.01.17
I strongly believe I’ll read this at some point, but it’s book 2 in the duology, so I’ll take it off until I read book 1 (which is on my shelf, being pretty).
removeflower

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch – added 03.05.17
I’ve had this one for a while. I’m a little nervous to start it because I tend to find sci-fi/thriller mash-ups to be hit and miss, but it’s so widely loved that I gotta try it.
keepflower

Nemesis by Brendan Reichs – added 03.08.17
I thought this sounded cool at the time, but it got pretty “meh” responses, so I almost removed it… that said, the synopsis still really catches my eye. 😛
keepflower

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller – added 03.08.17
I know a lot of people love these books, but I’ve read some excerpts and just don’t think the banter or writing is for me.
removeflower

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet – added 03.08.17
Not sure why I added this one, but reviews are calling it out on being super problematic, and honestly, the plot sounds really boring, too.
removeflower

BOOKS 381-385:

3

The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith – added 03.08.17
“Teens meet one time and immediately form a lifelong romance despite living in separate countries” isn’t really a trope I’m down for anymore.
removeflower

The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani – added 03.09.17
I don’t read a ton of MG fantasy, but something about this one really caught my eye, plus it’s already on my kindle!
keepflower

Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi – added 03.09.17
This was mostly a cover add, but it really does sound good – even though, again, I don’t read a ton of MG fantasy, so it’ll be a while before I get around to it.
keepflower

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah – added 03.09.17
You guys already know I love a good, devastating WWII hist-fic, but on top of that, this book has won so many awards and is so widely loved that I can’t stand the thought of removing it without a fair chance.
keepflower

What Price Gory? by Terry M. West – added 03.11.17
Good old indie horror anthologies… I doubt I’ll get to this one any time soon, but it does have some pretty neat sounding stories in the collection.
keepflower

BOOKS 386-390:

4

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza – added 03.12.17
This one isn’t super popular, but like… princess and her accused killer have to go into hiding together? I dunno, man, I’m kinda feeling it?
keepflower(for now?)

American Street by Ibi Zoboi – added 03.12.17
I just picked up a copy of this a few weeks ago, and I’m excited to read it! It’s an own-voice story about a Haitian immigrant, and sounds heavy, important, and wonderful.
keepflower

A Secondhand Life by Pamela Crane – added 03.12.17
I went through a spell where I was super into stories about people who had received organ transplants having dreams/visions/memories etc. of their donors, but now I’m just kinda hard to impress with the trope.
removeflower

Rebels Like Us by Liz Reinhardt – added 03.12.17
Own-voice reviewers are calling this (white) author out for massively over-simplifying and dismissing the racial issues the biracial MC deals with, and that immediately makes me want this far away from my TBR.
removeflower

Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton – added 03.12.17
I’m pretty sure I removed book 1 in this series in a previous Down the TBR Hole post, so we all know where this one’s going.
removeflower

BOOKS 391-395:

5

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray – added 03.12.17
I like books about revenge, and I like books with multiple dimensions. This has both!
keepflower

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – added 03.12.17
This is a super widely loved hist-fic that I picked up from BookOutlet in my last order, and I’m just waiting for a day when I feel like being crushed to pick it up!
keepflower

Asylum by Madeleine Roux – added 03.12.17
Roux is one of those authors that I keep buying books from, despite having not read any of them yet. Whoops. Anyways, this is on my shelf… And it sounds fun.
keepflower

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill – added 03.12.17
This was a cover add, but it does sound interesting, and besides all of that, I’m pretty sure it’s required reading for the class I’m taking this summer.
keepflower

Carrie by Stephen King – added 03.13.17
Given how many times I’ve sworn I’ll read this eventually – and considering the fact that I already own a copy – nobody is more shocked than I am by this decision, but… I don’t really have any interest at all in reading this. I didn’t care for the story line in the film renditions, and I don’t expect to enjoy it enough in book format to justify it.
removeflower

BOOKS 396-400:

6

Intensity by Dean Koontz – added 03.13.17
I don’t read much Koontz anymore, but I loved him, years ago, and a lot of people say this is his most intense book (heh, see what I did there?). Anyways… I feel like I should give it a try.
keepflower

Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris – added 03.13.17
This is book #9 in a series I’ve only ever read book #1 in. Maybe I should actually continue the series before I commit to reading all the way through to #9.
removeflower

Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris – added 03.13.17
#6. Did I mention it’s been 5+ years since I read book #1?
removeflower

Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner by M.D. Spenser – added 03.13.17
This is a children’s horror book I read, uh… 15 years ago? Why is this even here? (Maybe a Goodreads glitch?)
removeflower

Mythology by Edith Hamilton – added 03.13.17
This is supposed to be a Greek mythology reference book I have, but this isn’t even the right listing, lmao.

REMOVAL PERCENTAGE THIS WEEK: 46%

    1. I had to remove The Rose and The Dagger from my TBR as well, because every single time that I tried to read it, I would become rather bored. I might have to read a physical copy and not an ebook copy to really get into it, but I’m not sure. Great list!

      1. If you do try picking up a physical copy, I hope it helps! There have actually been a few books that I couldn’t get into the ebooks of, but for some reason, switching to a print copy helped me get sucked in!

    1. Dark Matter is amazing, I’d drop everything right now and read it if I were you?

    1. my full review of this post: AMAZING.
removing Daughter of the Pirate King, removing Geography of You and Me, keeping School for Good and Evil, keeping The Nightingale, keeping All the Light We Cannot See……..all perfect calls

    1. With Carrie, listen to the audiobook instead. Sissy Spacek who portrays her in the original film adaptation narrates it and brings it to life! It also moves pretty quickly with her narrating.
With Beautiful Broken Girls, I read an ARC copy of it. It does have religious tones to it in a way that it effects only the girls lives instead of the ones around them. I don’t blame you for removing it. It is not a novel for the faint of heart when it comes to the Catholic faith if they are a part of it.

    1. I loved Daughter of the Pirate King / Siren Queen so that kind of hurts, really, haha.
I have the Paranormalcy-books by Kiersten White on my TBR! Got Even The Darkest Stars in my.. FairyLoot? I think? Anddd The School of Good and Evil is on my TBR as well; blogger-rec of some time last Summer, I think, but haven’t read it yet. :’)
I read Carrie in one go a week ago – it honestly isn’t thàt special but I’m still glad I read it because it’s another King-novel ticked off? And it didn’t creep me out so that’s a huge bonus. xD

      1. Bahaha, I’m sorry! If you love it, I’ll give it a try – promise. <3 I mean, probably not any time super SOON, but… well, you know how these TBRs are. ;P
Bahaha yes, I feel you – sometimes I feel guilty removing King's books, actually, just because I feel like they're considered "essential reading" for anyone who enjoys horror/thrillers. 😛

        1. Pfft, yeahyeah! I’ll be amazed as it is if you EVER pick it up, haha. Even more so since you keep getting all these new books! 😛
Ugh. On one hand, true. On the other hand you should just read what you feel like reading. It’s not like there aren’t any magic-loving readers out there who haven’t read the HP’s?

            1. You will.. someday.. Like.. When you’ve read all the other ones people keep bothering about and publishers send to you and the ones you bought yourself and.. uhm.. yeah. [never-ending, shh.]

    1. What a successful Down the TBR Hole post!
Also, aweee I loved Rebels Like Us, and didn’t know that people were saying that about it 🙁 But at the same time, I can kind of see why. And I mean…I did read it as a white reader, right?
