Down the TBR Hole #36

July 2, 2018

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 919 titles

BOOKS 651-655:

01.jpg

Jek/Hyde by Amy Ross – added 06.19.17
This Jekyll/Hyde retelling sounded so interesting at first, but wow, the reviews – a lot of people are saying to give this one a hard pass if you enjoy the original story, and I think I’ll take their advice.

The Creeping by Alexandra Sirowy – added 06.19.17
I know I always say YA mysteries are iffy for me, but this one sounds really interesting, and I got it for my birthday last year, so why not?
keepflower

First We Were IV by Alexandra Sirowy – added 06.19.17
On the other hand, I do not own this one yet, and I think I’d like to check Sirowy’s writing out before committing to any other books of hers!

How to Disappear by Sharon Huss Roat – added 06.19.17
This synopsis reminds me of the show Catfish, which I was obsessed with for a few years there, so it actually sounds super interesting to me.

Unf*ck Your Habit by Rachel Hoffman – added 06.21.17
I’m typically very reluctant to pick up “self help” books, but I have heard soooo many people say that this book actually was very insightful and gave them excellent tips, so I figure it’s worth grabbing from the library some time.

BOOKS 656-660:

02

New World: Rising by Jennifer Wilson – added 06.22.17
I don’t remember where I originally got this book, but it didn’t sound super interesting and I think I actually already unhauled it, so I’m definitely letting it go.

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – added 06.25.17
I didn’t even realize it had been so long that I’d had this on my TBR, but it still sounds good, so I still want to read it!
keepflower

The Novice by Taran Matharu – added 06.26.17
Eh… I think I’ll let this series go.
removeflower

A Line in the Dark by Malinda Lo – added 06.27.17
I almost removed this a while back, because its GR average is so low (3.32), but I really enjoyed a short story of Malinda’s I read earlier this year, and then someone offered me a copy in a trade, so I decided the least I could do was give it a fair shot.
keepflower

The Black Farm by Elias Witherow – added 06.27.17
This is one of those self-published horror novels you’d find in the Kindle store, and they tend to run a dime a dozen, but a fellow horror fan I know absolutely adored it and said it was surprisingly dark and twisted, so I keep saying I’ll buy the ebook one of these days.

BOOKS 661-665:

03

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft – added 06.28.17
I’m actually surprised I haven’t read this yet, but it definitely is staying!
keepflower

Piper Perish by Kayla Cagan – added 06.29.17
I already unhauled this and have no interest in getting another copy.
removeflower

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh – added 06.29.17
I know this one isn’t too widely loved, but I dig the idea that it has a prehistoric setting, and I already own the ebook, so… *shrug*
keepflower

The House Next Door by Darcy Coates – added 06.29.17
I love Darcy Coates’ writing. ♥
keepflower

Don’t Read After Dark by Carolyn McCray – added 06.29.17
Eh… I think I’ll pass.

BOOKS 666-670:

04

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai – added 06.29.17
Definitely reading this one! I have the ebook, but would probably get the audio version from the library, too.
keepflower

Hunted by Meagan Spooner – added 07.01.17
I know Beauty and the Beast retellings can get a little overdone, but this one sounds good!
keepflower

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma – added 07.03.17
This book is so ridiculously controversial among the bloggers and booktubers I know who have read it, that I’m actually shocked its average is so high (4.06), but I feel like this is one I have to read for myself.
keepflower

All the Rage by Courtney Summers – added 07.03.17
I’m so torn on this one… it really sounds like a basic YA mystery, which makes me want to remove it, but it’s also supposedly about rape culture, which makes me want to keep it.
keepflower

Down From the Mountain by Elizabeth Fixmer – added 07.03.17
This book has barely any ratings, and what it does have aren’t great, but… I’m such a sucker for cult stories. I think I’ll remove it, but if anyone has suggestions for cult-related books to add in its place, let me know in the comments!

      1. Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it! I know a lot of people told me it was a good summer read, but when I think of books like that I think fall and winter, so I think I’m going to read it then!

    1. Daaaaaamn The Novice is so good! Actually the biggest surprise of the year for me so far. I let go of Piper Perish as well LOL. I Am Malala is a really fast read to be honest.

        1. Definitely! However, tastes differ of course. So maybe it might not be a book for you, but you can only find out when you actually read it. It’ssomething like Pokémon, Lord of the rings and Harry Potter meet each other in a story and it’s really well written. The world building is really good as well.

          1. Very true! That honestly sounds like such a cool mesh and I love solid world building, so I’m going to give it a try. Thank you, Laurie! I honestly LOVE it when people can talk me into adding something back to my TBR, because it doesn’t happen often, but when it does, so far I have yet to regret it!

    1. I have to read Wicked in the Deep too. I read Hunted and I actually liked it. It has this Russian setting, I think?? I don’t remember ?? I am so bad at this lol

    1. I’ve read both Hunted (loved) and The Wicked Deep (hated). I hope you read them soon because I want to see your thoughts on them!

    1. You’re letting go of the Novice?! But that’s like.. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and Pokémon in one book [quoting the author on this but I had to agree in the end]. I pretty much want to demand you read my review on it if you haven’t already just to make sure you want to delete it – HA. 😛

Say hello! ♥
