Down the TBR Hole #39

July 22, 2018

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 922 titles

BOOKS 711-715:

01

Berserker — Emmy Laybourne: added 08.13.17
I don’t hear much about this one! It’s a historical fantasy western (talk about a genre-bender), and honestly is probably nothing I’d normally pick up, but the few friends I have who read it all seemed to like it, so I’ll try it.

The Breathless — Tara Goedjen: added 08.13.17
This was a cover add, but I’m so picky about YA mysteries and this one doesn’t sound special (plus, it’s sitting at an average of, like, 3.2?).

Walk on Earth a Stranger — Rae Carson: added 08.13.17
I literally only added this for the cover. It sounds like nothing I would enjoy at all, sadly. I’m just not a big fan of ‘old wild west’ settings, with very few exceptions.

The Night Market — Jonathan Moore: added 08.14.17
I actually traded for an ARC of this last year and forgot all about it! It’s one of those books that I’m not rushing to read right away, but it still sounds cool enough to keep on my TBR. The synopsis just has a LOT going on and I’m not really sure what it’s gonna be about.
keepflower

Incarnate — Josh Stolberg: added 08.14.17
I think I just added this for a goodreads giveaway on a whim… does anyone else ever enter giveaways for books you’re not 100% sure you want to read? I used to somewhat often, but now I don’t because I started feeling bad about not reading them, lmao.

BOOKS 716-720:

02

The Sword of Summer — Rick Riordan: added 08.14.17
*sing-song* We don’t remove Uncle Rick’s books~ Seriously, someday soonish, we’ll hit a spot in my TBR where there are, like, 10 of his books in a row, and I’ll probably just skip right past them in that post.
keepflower

Tash Hearts Tolstoy — Kathryn Ormsbee: added 08.15.17
Ace rep, internet sensationalism, and cyber-flirting: I’m here for all of it. (Does anyone know if I need to have read Anna Karenina to enjoy this?)
keepflower

A Natural History of Dragons — Marie Brennan: added 08.15.17
I’m just unapologetic trash for the covers of this series and I need them on my shelves.
keepflower

Wildcard — Marie Lu: added 08.15.17
I got 99 feelings about this serious but anxiety IS EVERY LAST ONE
keepflower

The Abyss Surrounds Us — Emily Skrutskie: added 08.15.17
At the time that I’m writing this, I’m halfway through her new release, Hullmetal Girls, and honestly not SUPER interested in reading anything else by this author, buuuut I already have this on my kindle and so many of my friends love it, so I’ll let it stay and give her another try.

BOOKS 721-725:

03

Little Heaven — Nick Cutter: added 08.18.17
All of this dude’s books just sound creepy as hell to me.keepflower

Before She Ignites — Jodi Meadows: added 08.18.17
I’ve felt very uninspired to pick this up ever since it came in my Owlcrate box last September, buuuut… it’s pretty. It’s the only Owlcrate exclusive cover I’ve ever liked more than the original. I feel like that has to count for something.
keepflower

The Tiger’s Watch — Julia Ember: added 08.19.17
Meh. I gave this author’s book The Seafarer’s Kiss high marks, but when I look back on it, I don’t actually think I’m interested in picking up anything else by her right now.
removeflower

Night of Cake & Puppets — Laini Taylor: added 08.19.17
It’s so gorgeous! Buuuut I haven’t even started the DOSAB series, so I’ll let this go until I decide whether or not I like the series to begin with.
removeflower

Vicious — V. E. Schwab: added 08.27.17
Yup yep yeah yeppers yes

BOOKS 726-730:

04

Daughters Unto Devils — Amy Lukavics: added 08.29.17
Heather has recommended this book to me and thinks I’ll love it, and I trust her! Plus, it sounds… creepy. I love historical horror.
keepflower

When They Come For You — James W. Hall: added 08.29.17
This was one of those monthly “Kindle First” freebies and it honestly doesn’t sound like anything I’ll ever read.
removeflower

Paper Princess — Erin Watt: added 08.29.17
I know this series is polarizing AF, buuuut I do what I want and what I want is to see the potential train wreck for myself.keepflower

Charnel House — Graham Masterton: added 08.29.17
I feel like this is one of those old horror stories (from the 70s) that every horror fan reads eventually but most of them don’t really enjoy? So… I’m not gonna give in to the hype on this one just yet.
removeflower

These Shallow Graves — Jennifer Donnelly: added 08.31.17
I still think it’s unfair for a standard hist-fic book to get such a good, solid creepy cover that 100% belongs on a YA historical horror story, but whatever. It still sounds pretty interesting, and it looks hella good on my shelf…

    1. Hey, so Tash Hearts Tolstoy is not my normal type of read but I do want to read it. If you find out for sure that it can be read standalone without reading Anna Karenina and might be interested in a buddy read with me at any point, please let me know <3

      1. Ooooh, yes please! I’ll have to grab it from the library but I would be so down for that. 😀 It turns out you apparently do not have to read Anna Karenina to enjoy it!

            1. Hahaha okay, will do! I feel you. I had to make a “Buddy Reads” sheet in my TBR spreadsheet, because I had gotten bad about forgetting when I planned them out with people.

    1. Oh no, reading your post this week has added two books to my TBR hahaha. I’ve seen Tash Hearts Tolstoy around, but I didn’t realize it had ace rep, so def had to add it. Berserker also sounds super cool– how did I miss it last year?!
I still have Walked on Earth a Stranger on my list, but I’ve been wavering about dropping it. I might read some more reviews before I make my final decision.
I really think you’ll like DoSaB. Do you have any plans on reading that series?

      1. Bahaha, SUCCESS! I hope you like them! And yes, I 100% plan on reading DoSaB, I’m actually really excited about it! I’m funny about reading multiple series from the same author at the same time, though, so I’ve been saving it for after Strange (and Muse of Nightmares).

    1. You don’t need to read Anna Karenina to enjoy Tash Hearts Tolstoy. To be fair, I’ve seen the movie so I know the basics of the story, but from what I remember, they explain everything relevant anyway. On the other hand, I guess in a sense you could consider some of Tash spoilers if you want to go into Anna Karenina completely blind.

    1. I love the Magnus Chase series; I hope you enjoy it too when you get around to it! ☺️ I also just finished Warcross today by Marie Lu, and I’m SO excited for Wildcard. (I can’t get over that ending!! ?)

      1. Yay, thank you! I have loved everything I’ve read by Rick so far, so I’m looking forward to it. OMG, right?! How lucky you are to not have to wait TOO long, because that cliffhanger…! Augh! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!

    1. I physically cringed when I saw you were keeping Paper Princess! I must say I am excited to read your thoughts on it if you do pick it up! ?

    1. Paper Princess is one of my favorites! I know it gets a bad rap but we all know that I love trashy romance okay.

    1. The Sword of Summer is one of my favourite Riordan trilogies! it’s got some fantastic rep!
      Happy reading!

    1. I hope that we both enjoy Wildcard and Paper Princess! Also, I forgot to mention this in my last comment…but…AH! You changed your theme! And it’s beautiful!

Say hello! ♥
