T10T: Books I Need Adaptations Of

September 4, 2018

TTT-Big2

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s prompt was bingeworthy shows and movies, but I don’t watch much TV and was planning on a horror movie recommendation list soon anyways, so I decided to name ten books I would like to see movie/television adaptations for!

01

1. The Siren and the Specter — Jonathan Janz
This book was one of the creepiest things I’ve read in my entire life, and I LOVED it. There were so many scenes in the book that made me think, “This would be SUCH a good movie adaptation!”

2. Locke & Key series — Joe Hill
This graphic novel series would make such an incredible adaptation. It’s been in the works for a while, but it keeps getting dropped and picked up again, so I’m trying not to get my hopes up until I have an actual release date. ? This is definitely the kind of story that needs a TV show and not just a movie!

3. A Court of Thorns and Roses series — Sarah J. Maas
I know the first book has technically been auctioned for a movie, but I’m so wary of that. If it were up to me, I would see the series adapted into a TV series with one season per book, preferably made by HBO or someone else who won’t shy away from the violent and fun bits. 😛

4. The Illuminae Files —Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman
Okay, I know this is literally in production right now (according to Jay’s twitter), but I still had to include it because I AM SO EXCITED. I think this series could make such a good film series!

5. Summer Bird Blue — Akemi Dawn Bowman
Now that the Netflix adaptation of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before has been such a smash hit, my brain is going overdrive thinking of all the beautiful, diverse, amazing contemporary titles that I want Netflix to adapt next, and this is at the top of my list. The scenery would be so stunning, too.

02

6. Sadie — Courtney Summers
I hesitated to add this one because of the podcast chapters, but then I realized how cool it would actually be, for the film scenes to cut between Sadie’s journey and the podcast host talking to people and interviewing them. The interview scenes could even be filmed like a documentary, and it would be phenomenal!

7. Nevernight — Jay Kristoff
Much like with the ACOTAR series, I’m picturing an HBO-hosted gory, violent, sex-filled, bloody as hell television series. Man… I’d want an entire episode dedicated to that library.

8. Wayward Children series — Seanan McGuire
How great would a television show of this series be? I’m thinking it could go like Sherlock, where each season only has a few episodes, and it could be broken down, one novella per season. Or a miniseries where each episode was 1.5-2 hours long… *wistful sigh*

9. Six of Crows — Leigh Bardugo
Go on, tell me you wouldn’t love a movie of this series. The banter, the drama, the action, the tears… Though, if they didn’t cast people who actually fit the characters (i.e. a plus size lady for Nina), I would set things on fire.

10. A Head Full of Ghosts — Paul Tremblay
need an adaptation of this. It could be so eerie. I had to double-check and make sure it wasn’t just a happy dream of mine, but this is, in fact, being made into a movie by the director who directed I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, which is one of my absolute favorite gothic horror flicks of the last few years. *happy dance*

Is there a book you’ve read recently that you’d like to see adapted?

      1. Haha yes to all of this. I know that technically there has been talk of ACOTAR being made into a movie, but I feel like they’re going to censor it down to PG-13 levels and it’s going to cut out so much. 😐

    1. Wonder how many people will be adapting the topic this week?
I wasn’t a fan of Illuminae as a book, but I think it might be pretty good as a movie.

      1. It’s always hard to guess! Sometimes the topics that I expect everyone to tweak, nobody does, or vice versa, lol. 🙂 I’m sorry you didn’t love Illuminae, but hopefully when the movie comes out you will like it better! Last Jay posted about it on twitter, it’s still in the works, but I guess it’s really slow going.

      1. Thank you, Shealea! All of the series you mentioned are actually on my TBR! I only own the first book in the other 3 series, but I have all of the Iron Fey books (so far) on my shelf, and I’m hoping to start the series before she continues it. 🙂 I’m with you, though – I really hope that the success of TATBILB will help push Netflix (and other companies!) to produce more films/shows with Asian rep, because even though I can’t relate on a personal level, watching my friends see themselves in the representation has made me cry happy tears a couple of times lol! ♥
Thanks for commenting, and I’ll check your list out, too! (I always need binge-watch recs!)

        1. Aaaaaaah, let me know once you started on The Iron King! It’s been a solid fave of mine since high school (which is a really, really long time ago). I would love to know your thoughts! ❤ And aww, it means the world to me to know that there are people like you who are with us in campaigning for Asian rep! ?

          1. Will do! 🙂 I’m very excited. I always love picking up older series that I missed the “hype train” for when they first came out, because it gives me a chance to go into them without any hype influence or bias. And honestly, I’m just happy to help wherever I can! ♥

    1. I’m reading Six of Crows this month but from what I already know it would be amazing to see on screen. I’ve just read This Mortal Coil and I’d love to see that adapted into a movie

        1. I had to put it down so I could keep reading Children of Blood and Bone because I couldn’t decide which one to read ? but what I have read of SOC I’ve loved!

      1. It would honestly work so well in a television show! I wonder if it’s ever been considered for an adaptation. I always think it’s odd how sometimes a book will be brand new and already have sold the rights, and other times, another (*cough* BETTER *cough*) book will be a few years old and have nothing in production.

    1. I’m going to start The Siren and the Specter today, and I’m so excited for it! I had NO IDEA Illuminae was in production, wow, that sounds amazing. I feel like if they have a solid budget, they will totally blow our minds, I can’t wait! I’m rereading Six of Crows right now, and I looove this world and characters so much, so I fully agree with its potential to become a fantastic movie.

      1. Oh how exciting! How are you liking The Siren and the Specter so far, or did you finish it? And yeah, I hope they do have a good budget for Illuminae! Last I heard, Brad Pitt was going to direct it – no clue how that will pan out lol!

        1. Finished The Siren and the Specter yesterday, and it was SO GOOD – well-written, creepy and full of twists. I’m trying to write a review right now, which should be somewhat more coherent than “This was FANTASTIC, read it!” but, sadly, that’s all I have so far. ?

    1. I want an entire SoC/CK TV series. I don’t want it to just stop at the end of CK, because let’s be real, with all these characters, there are bound to be more adventures they could get up to. Although without Matthias, I don’t know how it would be the same.

    1. Oh yes, both Illuminae and Six of Crows would make such great movies! I’d love to see both – but I think I’d be too scared to see Illuminae hahahaha 🙂 Lovely list!

      1. I’m not sure if they can, either! The thing I’d be most nervous about is their portrayal of AIDAN, because I feel like so much of his appeal is through the formatting of his pages and stuff.

    1. The things I would do for a Nevernight HBO tv series… -stares off into the distance- SERIOUSLY JUST TAKE MY MONEY HBO. IT WOULD BE SOOOOO GOOD!
Of course. I say this now. I MAY FEEL DIFFERENTLY AFTER DARKDAWN. (No I won’t I love this series lol)

    1. I am so conflicted about books being turned into movies or shows. On one hand if they did it well I would love to see ACOTAR as a series. Then on the other I want them to stay the hell away from it because I don’t want them to ruin it.

    1. Sadie would make SUUUUUUCH a good movie. and I feel like Wayward Children would be a great Black-Mirror esque miniseries? a bunch of standalone eps set in the same world. that would be the SHIT

      1. It honestly would make such a good movie, especially if they got the mood right. It’s obviously not horror, but I keep picturing Ti West aesthetics for it and I feel like a non-horror version of his film style would be spot on. And yes, I hadn’t even thought of that with Wayward Children but it would be PERFECT!

        1. absolutely. I was thinking somewhere near the mood of Big Little Lies? That miniseries has this oddly muted tone to it that I feel like would fit the aesthetic of Sadie super well.

    1. ACOTAR. ILLUMINAE. SIX OF CROWS. TOG. CARAVAL/LEGENDARY?!
OOH. Daughter of the Pirate King. Warcross! So many, so many!
I’ve no clue who I’d want to see as Rhysand though..

      1. Oh shit, you’re right, Caraval would make a really fun movie. I still need to read Legendary! I keep forgetting I have a copy (I won it, I was just gonna get it from the library at some point buuuuut can’t argue with free 😛 ). I would also love a super tech-y Warcross movie. And I’m excited for the TOG show, if it ever gets finished…

        1. Exactly! Oh, I wasn’t even planning on buying Legendary. That is until there were so many people going “IT’S WAY BETTER THAN CARAVAL” and I was like.. Okay – let’s risk it and order the thing. And they were right – even if I do say so myself, haha. I really like Legendary better!
Fingers crossed for the TOG show – but who knows how long that’ll take..

          1. Right! I saw just yesterday an article saying no news has come up about it in over a year now, and I don’t know how to feel about that. On one hand, no news could mean it’s been stalled or dropped, but on the other hand, when a show/movie goes into production it’s really common for the studio to make everyone go totally silent about it until it’s almost finished, so… D: *shrug*

            1. YES PLEASE. I keep thinking of who they would cast as Rowan and… I mean, can anyone honestly live up to my mental image of him? It’s like Rhysand. Can anyone REALLY pull that off? ?

            1. That’s the big question, isn’t it? Although I do think we’re EXTREMELY biased when it comes to those characters, haha. Let alone personal taste!
I do think Somerhalder should be able to pull it off in a very decent way though. If only because he’s brilliant at the tortured characters – and he isn’t an eyesore at all, haha.

    1. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT ILLUMINAE WAS GETTING ADAPTED!?!?!? When I first just saw the picture I went “Oooooh! That’s a great idea!” and apparently other people felt the same way and decided to do something about it! I’m so excited!
And YES! Six of Crows would be so brilliant. I’m imagining a darker version of Ocean’s 11 right now and I quite like it.

      1. Haha yup! Well, Google says there hasn’t been an update to the development since 2016, but someone asked Jay a couple of months ago on Twitter if it was still happening, and he said yes, and then he tweeted a picture of a film camera and said something like, “I have exciting news but I can’t share it yet,” so I’m pretty sure they’re making some progress on it!

    1. I think the podcast thing from Sadie would tie up nicely in a series or movie.
Scream (the series) has a podcast going on, and it works well with how the event unfold.

    1. Excellent list! I didn’t know that A Head Full of Ghosts was being adapted. What a lovely surprise, I feel like it’s SO well-suited to a TV or film adaptation.

    1. I NEED SO MANY OF THESE OH MY GOD! Six of Crows Peaky Blinders style, the Wayward Children mini-series, I’ve not even read Sadie or Nevernight yet but I know I’ll love them and will probably love their screen adaptions too!

        1. I know! I’ve had Nevernight and Godsgrave on my kindle for months but I keep putting it off because I know I’m gonna love them and once I’ve read them I won’t be able to read them for the first time again ?

            1. I do prefer waiting until a whole series is out before reading it. That way I can just go straight to the next book. So maybe I’ll just wait ?

Say hello! ♥
