The last mini review post went over well, so I decided to start making this an occasional thing! This week’s mini review round-up includes two graphic novels, one MG horror novella, and one YA fantasy novel.

Some the reviews below are the shortened version of my review, but the “goodreads” link buttons will take you to the full review. Enjoy!

OH MY WORD, it’s so cute I’m gonna die. This is one of the most precious, laugh-out-loud, heartwarming, charming damn things I’ve ever read in my life. I need a million more volumes, please. I cried happy tears at the end and I don’t even care. And Bitty is such a precious little bean and Shitty is so hilarious and quietly deep and Holster & Ransom are the perfect bromance duo ever and JACK. Sweet, precious little Quebecian (IT’S A WORD OKAY) Jack and his quiet brooding and dark, sad former tragedy and… sigh. I loved this a lot, okay.

I’d never read anything by Rad Bradbury before—I just never felt any pressing, urgent need to—but when some of my friends decided to host a readalong on Halloween, and I saw that the book was only a few dollars online, I figured now was a great opportunity to try Bradbury’s work out! Sadly, I was super unimpressed and ended up skimming the second half of it because I was so bored. The writing feels very dated, which obviously isn’t a bad thing for its time, but it wasn’t tremendously enjoyable to read in modern times. More than that, though, the writing style itself felt like it was trying too hard to be “weird” and the whole thing was super disinteresting.

I am so appreciative of the author sending me an eARC of this for an honest review, but unfortunately, this book and I are just not clicking. It’s not an issue of poor writing by any means, I think I’m just the wrong reader for this story. I tend to struggle with fantasy novels that drop you right into the action without much explanation beforehand of what’s going on, and I’m not enjoying the narrator very much in the way she interacts with the other characters. That said, I actually think this is a really well-written story that is going to make a LOT of readers very happy! If the plot interests you, I think you should, by all means, give it a try. ♥
Thank you so much to the author for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

TITLE: Super Chill
AUTHOR: Adam Ellis
RELEASED: October 23rd, 2018; Andrews McMeel
GENRE: Nonfiction/Humor
AGE RANGE: Adult

SYNOPSIS:
Adam’s comics deal with weightier topics like seasonal affective disorder and struggles with self-esteem, while also touching on the silly and absurd—like his brief, but intense obsession with crystals. With a bright, positive outlook and a sense of humor, Super Chill tells a story that is both highly relatable and intensely personal.

Adam Ellis is one of my favorite webcomic artists of all time, and Super Chill is a delightful collection of his comics that I think most anxiety-ridden millennials can relate to from start to finish. Or… maybe it’s just me who also finds themselves succumbing to crystal collecting obsessions and feeling the pressing need to call my mom and ask her to schedule my appointments despite my being a grown woman?

Anyways… This is adorable, and hilarious, and I love Adam Ellis. That is all.

Thank you so much to Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

    1. I read Check, Please! and loved Bitty too. I just wished each book would cover just one year so we could have more.

    1. I really need to read Check, Please! That comic has been in my orbit for so damn long. I remember people talking about it back on Tumblr. It sounds so adorable, I’m not sure why I haven’t picked it up yet. Great reviews ?!!

      1. It is sooooo good! It’s just really casual and sweet and I loved the characters so much. Definitely don’t expect a lot of plot going into it, but if you just want something fluffy and fun, I highly recommend it. 🙂 Thank you!!

    1. Oh my goodness, I just finished Check Please and loved it so so much! I’m glad I am not the only one who is wishing for endless volumes of these adorable characters. I LOVED Shitty I think the most. His character had me actually laughing out loud, but Bitty, sweet sweet Bitty. I swear I could legit hear his voice in my head as I was reading.

    1. Did you follow Adam Ellis’ Dear David saga? I thought it was sooo well-done for so long. Lost me towards the end, but it was so fun to follow!

Say hello! ♥
