Winter is here (or it will be very soon, anyways), and that means it’s time for another seasonal TBR jar! If you didn’t see my first post in this series back in September, I’ll give a quick rundown:
The seasonal TBR jar is a series idea I came up with in which, every season, I make a list of books from my owned TBR that fit the “mood” of that season! Then, throughout the next three months, I will randomly pull titles from that jar to motivate me to work on my backlist.
My autumn theme was horror, thrillers, and paranormal fantasy, and these are the titles I marked off the list during autumn:
- Brockmeyer, Matthew V. — Kind Nepenthe (DNF)
- Burke, Kealan Patrick — Kin (in progress)
- Burke, Kealan Patrick — Sour Candy (technically haven’t read it yet, but it’s on my “must read” list for Short-a-thon, so I’m counting it!)
- Gaiman, Neil — The Graveyard Book (★★★★★)
- Grant, Mira — Kingdom of Needle and Bone (★★★★★)
- Hill, Joe — NOS4A2 (in progress)
- Roux, Madeleine — Asylum (★★★)
Given that my autumn jar had 100 titles, I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped to, but I still made a little dent! I’m limiting myself to 40 titles this time.
Now, for my winter jar:
For winter, I like cozy, easy reads. I have seasonal depression that tends to kick in around mid-January every year, so I already know I’ll need some self-care titles lined up, and for me, that means easy and comfy reads like graphic novels, short story collections, novellas, and contemporary titles!
Graphic novels:
- Unnatural, Vol. 1 — Mirka Andolfo
- Moonstruck, Vol. 1 — Grace Ellis
- Bingo Love — Tee Franklin
- Tales from the Darkside — Joe Hill
- Fear Nothing, Vol. 1 — Dean Koontz
- Spell on Wheels — Kate Leth
- The Witch Boy — Molly Ostertag
- Fence, Vol. 1 — C. S. Pacat
- Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition, Vol. 3 — Natsuki Takaya
- Nailbiter, Vol. 1 — Joshua Williamson
Short story collections:
- I Am Not Your Final Girl — Claire C. Holland (technically a poetry collection)
- What the #@&% is That? — multiple authors
- Because You Love to Hate Me — multiple authors
- Meet Cute — multiple authors
- At the Cemetery Gates, Vol. 2 — John Brhel & Joseph Sullivan
- Bones — Andrew Cull
- The Sea Was a Fair Master — Calvin Demmer
- Splatterpunk Forever — multiple authors
- Rogue Nights — multiple authors
- Revenge — Yoko Ogawa
Novellas:
- We Should All Be Feminists — Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- The Legend of the Golden Raven — K. Ancrum
- The Lost Sisters — Holly Black
- Dead Lake — Darcy Coates
- River of Teeth — Sarah Gailey
- Damaged Goods — Talia Hibbert
- Witching Hour Theatre — Jonathan Janz
- Mapping the Interior — Stephen Graham Jones
- Cleaner of Bones — Meg Kassel
- Dream Woods — Patrick Lacey
Contemporary:
- With the Fire on High — Elizabeth Acevedo
- What to Say Next — Julie Buxbaum
- A Heart in the Body in the World — Deb Caletti
- American Panda — Gloria Chao
- Saint Anything — Sarah Dessen
- Once and For All — Sarah Dessen

December 6, 2018I love this idea!!! It really is an awesome way to tackle the most buried books in our TBRs. I might actually do this myself soon! I’m crossing my fingers for you to draw Meet Cute and American Panda this season. I loved both books so much… The first was super cute and holiday-y (let’s pretend that’s a word!) and the second had a lot of impact and meaning for me. I love the main character in American Panda and how she deals with the ups and downs of her life. Hopefully she keeps you company and warms you up during your mid-January seasonal depression ?

December 6, 2018This is such a creative spin on the TBR Jar! I couldn’t imagine having 100 possible titles, but busting out 8 is still really good!
Hopefully you’re able to get to a good chunk of these over the next few months!

December 6, 2018Thank you! 😀 I sure hope so, haha! I’m feeling a LOT more optimistic about this one than I was over the autumn one, especially since this one is so much smaller.

December 12, 2018It is good that you are anticipating mid january with this tbr jar. <3 I hope you pick Because You Love to Hate Me because I am curious to see what you will think of it. It certainly wasn't my cup of tea with the exception of two stories.

December 12, 2018Haha I am so nervous about that anthology! I put it in here in hopes that I will FINALLY force myself to read it because I hear so many negative things, but on the other hand I didn’t hesitate to buy the ebook when it was on sale for $3 a while back because I’ve heard a lot of people say it has their favorite Victoria Schwab story!
