Stacking the Shelves — March 8th, 2019

March 8, 2019

Because I don’t have enough weekly memes already… ? Those of you who have been around a while might remember that I used to do Stacking the Shelves, but stopped a long while back! I’ve decided lately that my haul posts are getting too lengthy, so I’m going to start doing Stacking the Shelves posts with the important info, and monthly hauls will be trimmed down a little from here on.

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!
If you want to find out more about Stacking The Shelves, please visit the official launch page!

Physical Review Copies:

42370636
The Near Witch — Victoria Schwab
YA fantasy
I honestly can’t believe I was offered the chance to read one of my favorite authors’ debut novels in its gorgeous new re-release format. It’s a story about witches and legends.

NetGalley Approvals:

42673593
Rebel — Beverly Jenkins
adult historical romance
This is a historical romance set right after the Civil War, and also, can you believe I’ve never read anything by the Beverly Jenkins?!
42368604
Lock Every Door — Riley Sager
adult thriller
I kind of hated Final Girls by this author (I think it was my first ever roast review!), but I’ve heard he’s come a long way since then. This one is about a woman who house-sits an apartment in a very peculiar complex and starts noticing super weird stuff going down.
40755416
How to Make Friends with the Dark — Kathleen Glasgow
YA contemporary
The entire synopsis for this revolves around a girl recovering from her mother’s death, so it sounds brutal as hell.
36683928
Spin the Dawn — Elizabeth Lim
YA fantasy
They had me at “Project Runway meets Mulan”, tbh. I believe this book also features own-voice Chinese rep!
41974115
Hope and Other Punchlines — Julie Buxbaum
YA contemporary
I loved Tell Me Three Things by this author and I’ve been wanting to read more from her! This is about a girl who’s grown up as the subject of an internet meme, desperately seeking anonymity at a local summer camp.
38581969
The Art of Taxidermy — Sharon Kernot
YA historical fiction
This is a novel in verse about a young girl who copes with her mother’s death by taking up taxidermy. I already read this one, and wasn’t super fond of it. ⭐⭐⭐
41555950
Five Midnights — Ann Davila Cardinal
YA horror
This is a retelling of a Puerto Rican urban legend, and is set in modern Puerto Rico, where a couple of teens go off in search of a murderer and possibly find a monster. It sounds super creepy, plus I love the idea that it’s a horror retelling, as we don’t see many of these!
40864797
How the Light Gets in — Katy Upperman
YA contemporary
Another book about grief! This one’s about a girl whose sister has passed away, so she goes to spend the summer with her aunt in hopes of staying busy, but finds herself feeling haunted by her sister’s presence.
40858877
We Are the Ghosts — Vicky Skinner
YA contemporary
Another book about death in the family? You betcha. After Ellie’s estranged brother passes away, she goes on a road trip to try and learn who he really was, and she ends up bonding with his best friend and ex-girlfriend.
42129393
New Orleans Rush — Kelly Siskind
adult contemporary romance
Beatrice Baker, struggling artist, thinks life is pretty good until she finds her boyfriend with another woman. After keying the wrong car in her rage, she finds herself indebted to work as a magician’s assistant—a very swoony magician!

Kindle Purchases/Freebies:

29939402Unf*ck Your Habitat — Rachel Hoffman
adult nonfiction
This is a self-help book on cleaning and organization! I’m not usually big on self-help, and the last organizational book I tried didn’t go well for me (*stares pointedly at Marie Kondo*), but they have excerpts on their website that actually sounded brilliant and were fun to read.
25867895Experimental Film — Gemma Files
adult horror
This is a ghost story about a woman who investigates the disappearance of a Canadian filmmaker. While looking through the filmmaker’s old films, she accidentally brings the evil entities into her own family’s life.
38256749
Body Positive Power — Megan Jayne Crabbe
adult nonfiction
Megan is most commonly known by her instagram account @bodyposipanda, where she models plus-sized outfits and talks about loving and accepting yourself no matter what your size or weight or appearance. She’s super intersectional and awesome, and I love her a lot, so I’m really excited to read her book!
34387859Garden of Fiends — Mark Matthews
adult horror anthology
This is a collection of short horror stories about drugs/addictions, which is usually not a topic I reach for often (if you didn’t know, there’s actually a very niche subgenre of horror dedicated to substance abuse stories). That said, a few authors I really enjoy are in this anthology, and it was free!

Physical Purchases:

39897058
The Fever King — Victoria Lee
YA dystopian
After hearing so many of my friends rave about this book, I had to get it! It’s about a teen who wakes up in what used to be the US, and wants to use his newfound magic against the corrupt government, but things go awry when he falls for the minister’s son.
38524301Shades of Magic, Vol. 1 — V. E. Schwab
adult fantasy graphic novel
This is a prequel graphic novel series that takes place before the Shades of Magic trilogy, and follows the life of Maxim Maresh (Rhy’s father) as a youngster. I’ve been so excited for this to release and I can’t wait to read it!
29499010Ten Count, Vol. 2 — Rihito Takarai
adult romance manga
This is the second volume in a yaoi manga series about a man who OCD who starts to fall for his therapist. I know it’s the sort of pairing that sounds like it could easily go wrong, but the first volume handled it so well and it had SUCH good OCD rep, plus the art is stunning and the characters are so enjoyable!

    1. Well stack those shelves! Lol! I added V.E. Schwab (A Darker Shade of Magic) to my TBR after listening to an old episode of the podcast Writing Excuses. Do you plan to read these soon or do you just add these to your general TBR? Just curious. I’m kind of a slow reader but hoping to speed things up. Thanks for sharing!

      1. I just add them to my general TBR, though since most of these were review copies, I do hope to read them within the next couple of months! 🙂 I hope you love A Darker Shade of Magic. That’s one of my all time favorite series!

      1. Awww I would share if I could!! I was blown away when they offered it to me. I literally just stared at my laptop with my mouth open for a minute ? And then I ran and texted my spouse and was like, “Does this mean I’ve made it as a blogger that I got offered a Victoria Schwab review copy?!” haha!

    1. I’m hoping to read Shades of Magic, Vol. 1 soon even though I haven’t read the Shades of Magic trilogy. But hopefully the comic will convince me to read the trilogy!

      1. Ooooh, I so hope it does convince you to! I know Victoria said you can read them in either order, so hopefully it’ll be just what you need to motivate you hehe. 😀 If it isn’t within the next month or two, I could probably be talked into buddy rereading the first book of the Shades series if you wanted to! 😉

    1. Oh I really want to read the near witch as well!
Interested in your thoughts about the fever king and spind the dawn!

    1. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Lock Every Door after you get to it! I’m torn on whether it sounds interesting to me or not so I think I’m going to have to hold out until I read some reviews.

Say hello! ♥
