NetGalley/Edelweiss Approvals:

  • Darkdawn — Jay Kristoff
    • adult fantasy
      • Book #3 in The Nevernight Chronicle. No synopsis for this one, because I’m finishing up Godsgrave right now and don’t want spoilers. ?
  • The Rest of the Story — Sarah Dessen
    • YA contemporary
      • Sarah Dessen was my intro to YA contemporary as a kid and I am SO excited to read this. After Emma’s mom passes away, she’s unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s estranged family, and falls back into step with her childhood best friend.
  • DEV1AT3 — Jay Kristoff
    • YA sci-fi
      • Book #2 in the Lifelike series! I need more Lemon Fresh ASAP. ??
  • That Kind of Guy — Talia Hibbert
    • adult romance
      • Rae’s recently divorced and needs a fake date for an important award ceremony, so she goes with her new best friend, Zach (Nate’s brother, if you’ve read the other books in this series!). He’s known for casually hooking up, but he’s ready to settle down, and he’s falling for one woman who doesn’t want to date him for real.

  • This is Not a Love Scene — S.C. Megale
    • YA contemporary
      • Maeve has a crush on Cole, but she thinks he can’t possibly like her back, because she has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. When he agrees to star in her senior film project, she learns he might care more than she thinks.
  • Birthday — Meredith Russo
    • YA contemporary
      • Two kids were born on the same day and are bonded for life, with the book featuring them on their birthday each year (includes own-voice trans girl rep ♥).
  • Eight Will Fall — Sarah Harian
    • YA dark fantasy
      • In a world where magic is illegal, eight criminals are sent on a mission into a terrifying cavern to fight evil beasts.

  • Light it Up — Kekla Magoon
    • YA contemporary
      • The story of a 13-year-old girl’s death by police brutality, told through multiple perspectives.
  • salt slow — Julia Armfield
    • adult speculative short stories
      • A collection of fantasy/speculative (I think) stories about women and their societal experiences, their bodies, isolation, obsession, and love.
  • The Dragon Warrior — Katie Zhao
    • MG fantasy
      • A Chinese mythology-inspired story about a 12-year-old outcast who stumbles into battle with a demon and helps defeat it, leading her to suspect she’s a fabled warrior meant to lead an army of dragons.

  • Fake it Till You Break it — Jenn P. Nguyen
    • YA contemporary
      • Best friends fake date to get their nagging mothers off their backs, but maybe they don’t hate each other as much as they’ve always thought they did?
  • This Was Our Pact — Ryan Andrews
    • MG fantasy graphic novel
      • A couple of boys go on an adventure to find where the annual Autumn Equinox’s paper lanterns end up, and they find friendship and a talking bear, I guess?
  • Scary Stories for Young Foxes — Christian McKay Heidicker
    • MG horror
      • A couple of fox kits go through a scary world of monsters and ghosts in a collection of eight short illustrated stories.

  • Star Collector, Vol. 2 — Sophie Schonhammer (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
    • new adult romance manga
      • #2 in a new adult m/m romance series about a couple of teen boys falling in love. Very slice-of-life and pretty, though I didn’t like this volume as much as volume 1.
  • I’m Not Dying with You Tonight — Kimberly Jones & Gilly Segal
    • YA contemporary
      • Two teen girls — one black, one white, neither friends — get caught up together in a football-game-turned riot, and have to learn how to understand one another’s POV. (the black MC, Lena, is own-voice writing — not sure I’d have picked up this book’s premise otherwise, but I think it’ll be done really well!)
  • Kingdom of Exiles — Maxym M. Martineau
    • adult paranormal fantasy
      • Comp’d as Assassin’s Creed + Fantastic Beasts. Leena has the realm’s most talented mercenary on her heels, so she offers to trade powerful magical creatures for her freedom.

Kindle Purchases/Freebies:

  • The Matrimonial Advertisement — Mimi Matthews
    • adult historical romance
      • Helena and Justin’s marriage was supposed to be a passion-less, boring business arrangement, but when Helena’s past comes back to threaten her, Justin finds his feelings are stronger than expected. I read this author’s A Holiday By Gaslight last year and it was one of the best historical stories I’ve EVER read.
  • Wolfsong — T.J. Klune
    • new adult paranormal romance
      • I… don’t even know how to explain this synopsis because it sounds so convoluted, but I hear SO MUCH hype for this book, and it’s an m/m werewolf/shapeshifter (not sure which?) romance.
  • Dying for a Living — Kory M. Shrum
    • adult paranormal fantasy
      • Jesse gets paid to die for other people, over and over again, but when she becomes the sole suspect in a huge murder mystery, she might die for real if she can’t find who framed her.

Physical Purchases & Gifts:

  • The Weight of the Stars — K. Ancrum
    • YA contemporary
      • This one wasn’t a purchase, but Kayla is amazing and sent me this signed copy just to be sweet! ♥
  • Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell — Nathan Ballingrud
    • adult horror short stories
      • Nathan Ballingrud’s last anthology, North American Lake Monsters, was the book I most heavily credit for my love of horror anthologies today, so I’m very excited that he’s finally released another one!
  • Holy Sister — Mark Lawrence
    • adult fantasy
      • Book #3 in the Book of the Ancestor series! I’ve been grabbing these hardbacks as they release but basically planned on waiting to start the trilogy until it ended, so now that I have this, book 1 is going on a TBR very soon.

  • The Red Scrolls of Magic — Cassandra Clare
    • YA fantasy
      • I have a long way to go before I’m caught up enough to start this series, but did that stop me from pre-ordering this? Nnnooooope…
  • The Dark Game — Jonathan Janz
    • adult horror
      • It’s Jonathan Janz… of course I needed the finished copy! I’ll have a review going up for this one next week (probably Monday).
