August Recap & Haul Time!

September 14, 2021

It’s time for a (delayed) look at my August reading life!

Like I mentioned in my post looking back on the first half of 2021 (+ July), I want to start posting monthly wrap-ups again! I don’t plan on doing separate haul posts anymore, so instead, I’ll be including my favorite hauls in my monthly wrap-up posts.

First, what I read:

  • The Strange Thing We Become and Other Dark Tales by Eric LaRocca ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • An absolutely incredible collection of stories that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I finished. Check out my review here!
  • So Much for Love by Sophie Lambda ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • A brutally honest graphic novel about toxic/abusive romantic relationships – and the healing process after getting out.
  • How to Keep House While Drowning by K.C. Davis ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • K.C Davis is one of my favorite tiktokers and this is a short little book about finding the intersection of mental health, self-care, and a clean home. It’s on KU and I loved it a lot!
  • Sensor by Junji Ito ⭐⭐⭐
    • As usual, Junji’s work is fun but somehow almost always misses the mark just a little bit for me. This one’s a cosmic horror manga and while it wasn’t perfect, I recommend checking it out.
  • Displacement by Kiku Hughes ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • An incredible graphic novel about a modern teen being taken back in time to experience the internment camps her grandmother was located in. This broke my heart a whole lot.

  • Craigslist Confessional by Helena Dea Bala ❌ (DNF)
    • I expected more from this, but at the point I made it to, the stories were mostly so incredibly mundane and boring that I couldn’t bother continuing.
  • Be Gay, Do Comics edited by Matt Bors ⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • An entire graphic novel anthology of queer stories by queer creators! Mostly autobiographical and really enjoyable for the most part.
  • Giant Days, Vol. 14 by John Allison ⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • I finally finished the series! I was so sad to say goodbye, but I was even more sad by how lackluster the ending of this volume felt. That said, definitely still pick it up if you’ve been putting it off!
  • Abel by Katee Robert ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • I’m gonna be honest: I need people to stop sleeping on this series. I loved this book so much more than any of her other books I’ve read and it featured one of the best depictions of the best-friends-to-enemies-to-lovers trope I’ve ever seen, plus phenomenal polyam rep.
  • Children of Demeter by E.V. Knight ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    • So, so glad I was sent a copy of this bizarre, suspenseful cult horror story! I’ll be posting a full review for this one soon, but needless to say, I recommend it highly.

And now, for some of my favorite hauls from August:

And finally, a little August life update:

August was a good month for me! As many of you may know, I had surgery at the end of July, so August was primarily about self-care and recovery, and it went smoothly. I had some nice time off from work, got back into the swing of reading and creating bookish content here and on my bookstagram, and – for whatever inexplicable reason, I don’t know – apparently underwent a metamorphosis into the kind of person who enjoys cleaning and organizing things? Seriously, I did a 180 towards the end of my recovery period and became obsessed with cleaning. 😂 It’s been pretty nice.

(In all honesty, I think following K.C. Davis/@domesticblisters on TikTok helped a LOT. She focuses a lot on removing the moral aspects from cleaning and learning how to stop feeling like a failure when your home isn’t clean, and in turn, getting rid of the shame and guilt associated with NOT cleaning has somehow made me want to clean a lot more. It’s pretty great!)

How was your August? What was your favorite book you read or hauled, or what was something nice that happened in your life?

    1. Happy you had a good august, and hopefully you’re all recovered now! xx

Something I just LOVE to do is mopping. I do it at work, and I come home to mop the house too as mother can’t really do it because of her arm.. and father’s working alot xd Apart from that, moving furnitures around has always been soothing to me.
Though I definately like the concept of removing the premade guilt of cleaning!

      1. Thank you, Kristina! I’m feeling much better now. 🙂 Ohhh, mopping is so nice haha! I’m not as big on moving furniture, but you know what, my spouse LOVES rearranging our furniture, so you’re not alone! 😂

Say hello! ♥
