This week, I’ll be highlighting one of my current reads, What I Lost by Alexandra Ballard.
No one told me that when I got skinny I’d grow fur. Tiny translucent hairs, fine like white mink, appeared on my arms, my legs, and even, to my horror, my face, giving me downy blond sideburns no girl should have. When I looked it up, the fur had a name – lanugo. Babies are born with it. Anorexics grow it.
I actually got this book as an ARC a month or two ago, but I have a horrible habit of not reading my ARCs until the week they release (or the week after), so naturally, it released earlier this week and I just started on it yesterday. That said, this first line was really interesting, because it kind of sets this tone that What I Lost is going to address the ugly side of EDs – the side effects that embarrass its sufferers, like lanugo. That immediately drew me in, because my last read about an ED was Paperweight, which glorified anorexia tremendously and left me incredibly disappointed. So far, I’ve really enjoyed this book, though, and can’t wait to finish it and give you guys a review!
