June 2019 Haul/TBR Checkpoint

July 20, 2020

From the “series return” announcement:

If you’ve been following my blog for a while (at least since last April), you may remember my haul & TBR “roundup” posts, where once every 3-6 months, I’d take a look back at old TBR and haul posts and figure up the stats for how many of those books I had read since the original posts. I had a lot of fun doing these, so I’m not sure why I stopped, but I was recently inspired by Misty to pick up the series again — and this time, I’m changing each post to focus on just one month’s haul and TBR at a time!

I think I’d like each checkpoint post (previously named “roundup”, but I like this idea of a progress check-in term better) to tackle the posts from exactly a year prior, so I’ll be doing these once a week or so until I get caught up, and then they’ll just come once monthly. I hope you all like seeing these updates as much as I like writing them! ? UPDATE: Today’s will be the last “catching up” post — next week’s post will have us at the year mark, which means after next week, you’ll only see these once a month!

Side note: I will not be counting library loans or Kindle freebies in these stats. I also do not count rereads in the TBR checkpoints.

TBR checkpoint

Lol, I forgot until writing this post that June 2019 was the month I started with 34(!!!) ongoing reads. ? Some of the leftover reads were actually on my May 2019 TBR, which means they were in last week’s checkpoint post, so I’ll skip those.

According to a note at the start of my June 2019 haul post, this was my “last big ARC haul” before an ARC ban… but I truly don’t remember how well that ban went, so I’ll be very interested to see how the July 2019 checkpoint goes. ??? Also, can we talk about how much better the “read” percentage is for this than it was for my May 2019 haul?!

So, do you ever look back on your old TBRs and hauls to check your progress? Is it usually better or worse than mine? ? Mine isn’t great in this checkpoint, but I’m hoping these stats will get progressively better — partially because I haul less books than I used to in the average month, and partially because I’m trying to get better about actually reading things shortly after hauling them!

    1. There are some books I noticed in this haul that are on my TBR too, and I’m very excited to read them! I think the one I’m most excited for is Middlegame, which is a bit strange, since it’s not a book that fits into the genres that I normally read, but I’ve just heard such great things!

I also want to let you know that I read Wild and Crooked this year and absolutely adored it! It has such great discussions about disability, socio-economic status, and so much more! I’d highly recommend it!

      1. Middlegame seriously sounds so good! I’m sad that I haven’t read it yet but I feel you, it’s a bit outside of the norm for me, mainly because I’m just not usually into superhero books very much, but I’m sure Seanan has put a spin on it that I’ll end up loving. ? Hopefully we’re both able to get to it soon and love it!

Ooooh, excellent! I NEVER hear anyone talk about Wild and Crooked so I had no idea. I don’t even honestly remember much of what it’s about but you just made me want to read it that much sooner! 😀 Thank you!

    1. Again so many good books still on here!
I hope you will read Middlegame and Wicked fox at some point, they are some of my faves!

      1. Those are two of the ones on this list that I was to pick up soonest! They both sound so good and I’m even more excited knowing you loved them. 😀 Thank you, dear!

    1. i love these kinds of posts!! though i’d be too nervous to look back at my own…. i know that there would probably more unread than read ?

the audio for i love you so mochi is great! it’s such a wholesome read. and i just reread wicked fox so i’m prepared for the sequel to come out next month. i hope you love wilder girls if you get back to it at some point. the body horror put me off at first but i ended up loving it so much and i’m even more eager to dip my toe into horror now

      1. Thank you! <3 lmao yeah I feel you, it is a little bit nerve wracking when I actually do the stats because I always know it's going to be rough! But it's fun enough to be worth it and it has really made me rethink the way I formulate my TBRs and the books that I haul lately. Like there have been quite a few books I've almost bought over the last few weeks and decided not to at the last minute because of these posts so that's a bonus!

Oh I'm so glad you liked the audio for Mochi, I think that's available on Hoopla right now so I'll definitely have to check it out! <3
