October TBR: birthday re-reads and spooky times ♡

October 2, 2020

It’s finally time for my favorite month of the year: October!

Not only does October mean my favorite season and my favorite holiday, but it also includes my birthday (the 16th!), which means treating myself to a bit of reading indulgence: this year, that includes re-reading my favorite romance series with one of my best friends!

This year, October also includes round 2 of Graphic-a-thon, so this TBR is not including the massive pile of graphic novels, comics, and manga I’m hoping to pick up during the readathon! (More info and my G-A-T TBR HERE!)

Dracula by Bram Stoker

I haven’t read this since I was a pre-teen, but I’ve been wanting to read it again for ages!

A true masterwork of storytelling, Dracula has transcended generation, language, and culture to become one of the most popular novels ever written. It is a quintessential tale of suspense and horror, boasting one of the most terrifying characters ever born in literature: Count Dracula, a tragic, night-dwelling specter who feeds upon the blood of the living, and whose diabolical passions prey upon the innocent, the helpless, and the beautiful. But Dracula also stands as a bleak allegorical saga of an eternally cursed being whose nocturnal atrocities reflect the dark underside of the supremely moralistic age in which it was originally written — and the corrupt desires that continue to plague the modern human condition.

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

My review copy of this came in a couple of weeks ago, and I’m so excited to finally read it!

The emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.

Lin is the emperor’s daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.

Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.

Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh

I’ve been waiting so many years for this book — how could I not pick it up right away?

Solutions and Other Problems includes humorous stories from Allie Brosh’s childhood; the adventures of her very bad animals; merciless dissection of her own character flaws; incisive essays on grief, loneliness, and powerlessness; as well as reflections on the absurdity of modern life.

Halloween Season by Lucy A. Snyder

What a perfect way to get in the Halloween mood (I mean, as if I weren’t already). I’m hoping to read this one ASAP and get a review posted for its release next week!

Halloween is the most wonderful part of the year for many of us. For dedicated fans, the season begins when the leaves start turning autumn colors and doesn’t finish until Hallowtide ends in November. With it comes a whole lot of fun: scary movies and stories, haunted houses, seasonal sweets, spooky decorations, costume parties, and of course trick or treat. But Halloween is also a deeply spiritual time for some; it’s an opportunity to remember and honor loved ones who have passed on.

Master storyteller Lucy A. Snyder has filled her cauldron with everything that Halloween means to her and distilled it into a spell-binding volume of stories. Within these pages you’ll find thrills and chills, hilarity and horrors, the sweet and the naughty.

Cradleland of Parasites by Sara Tantlinger

I technically have already started this one, and I already adore it.

Bram Stoker Award-winner Sara Tantlinger delivers her CRADLELAND OF PARASITES, a harrowing and darkly gorgeous collection of poetry chronicling the death and devastation of one of history’s greatest horrors: The Black Plague.

We Live Inside Your Eyes by Kealan Patrick Burke

This is on my fall TBR (which you can read HERE if you missed it a couple of weeks ago), but I know I’m going to pick it up ASAP, so I thought I might as well throw it on this list, too!

In the ruins of an old parking garage, there is an effigy lashed to a pillar. To anyone else, the remains of the woman with the goat skull head is a warning. To a lonely young boy looking for escape, it is a god of salvation. At its feet lay tattered old notebooks, scattered stories, tales of strange encounters, of broken people and monstrous things, and of corrupt hearts and evil minds. In order to complete his transfiguration, the boy must read these stories, but he has no idea the fate that awaits him.

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade

I’m currently reading an earlier work of this author’s, Teach Me, and adoring it so much that there’s no way I can hold myself back from picking up another book by her ASAP!

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. While the world knows him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on TV, Gods of the Gates, he’s known to fanfiction readers as Book!AeneasWouldNever, an anonymous and popular poster.  Marcus is able to get out his own frustrations with his character through his stories, especially the ones that feature the internet’s favorite couple to ship, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone ever found out about his online persona, he’d be fired. Immediately.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s hidden her fanfiction and cosplay hobby from her “real life” for years—but not anymore. When she decides to post her latest Lavinia creation on Twitter, her photo goes viral. Trolls and supporters alike are commenting on her plus-size take, but when Marcus, one half of her OTP, sees her pic and asks her out on a date to spite her critics, she realizes life is really stranger than fanfiction.

Even though their first date is a disaster, Marcus quickly realizes that he wants much more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. And when he discovers she’s actually Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to hide from her. With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?

The Ravenswood series by Talia Hibbert

Yep, this is the romance series I’m re-reading for my birthday month, and my amazing friend Owl is joining me! ♥ I think this will be my 4th or 5th time reading the first book, A Girl Like Her, but only my second time reading the sequels: Damaged Goods, Untouchableand That Kind of Guy. I can’t wait!

In this small English town, feisty, outcast heroines are swept off their feet by the strong, sweet men who love them.

What are you most excited to read this month?

    1. I’ve pre-ordered Spoiler Alert and Charming as a Verb, and I’m so excited to read them both! I haven’t read Teach Me, but I have read 40-Love and adored it, so I cannot wait for Spoiler Alert to arrive on my doorstep! Other than those 2 books though, I have no plans. I just want to mood read this month, and hopefully I’ll enjoy whatever I pick up!

    1. Barnes and Nobles came out with this awesome cover of Dracula. I almost picked it up. I might have to go back and get it soon. I’ve never read it. I am planning to read IT this month so I’m trying to read light books. I put on hold a bunch of graphic novels so excited for those.
