Summerween TBR Time!

July 1, 2021

Do I have any right to be posting official readathon TBRs when I’ve read almost NOTHING this year? No.

Am I doing it anyways?

It’s time… for SUMMERWEEN! 🎃👻

If you’re not familiar with Summerween, it’s an annual readathon hosted by OliviaReadAlatte and GabbyReads over on booktube! I love Olivia and Gabby both a lot, and I always look forward to this readathon (or, hell, any readathon that prioritizes spooky reads). If you need more info, you can find Olivia’s announcement video here and Gabby’s announcement video here!

The readathon starts July 2nd and ends July 8th, and the prompts are…
🎃 read a book in the dark
👻 read a paranormal book
🎃 read a horror book
👻 read a book with Halloween colors on the cover
🎃 bake or make a drink to go with your spooky read

Since I haven’t been reading a ton over the last several months, I decided to pick a pretty manageable TBR for myself, including a few quick reads like graphic novels! Here’s my TBR for the readathon:

55867888 🎃 read a book in the dark

The Icepick Surgeon by Sam Kean

This is a nonfiction/true crime book about terrible crimes that have been committed throughout history, all in the name of science! Some of the history in this book dates back to thousands of years ago, and I think it’s going to be a really interesting and unsettling read. I’m in a big nonfiction mood lately, too, and I’m trying to start getting better about reading review copies before they release (this one comes out July 13th). I picked this one for the “read in the dark” prompt because I have an ALC from LibroFM that I would like to listen to!

51323358 👻 read a paranormal book

Something is Killed the Children, Volume 2 by James Tynion IV

I really loved Volume 1 of this graphic novel series about monsters and a badass monster hunter, so picking up Volume 2 (and probably re-reading Volume 1 as well) seemed like a good fit for the readathon! This graphic novel series is about a town in which kids keep getting eaten by some unknown monster, until a mysterious young woman shows up to hunt it down and put an end to it.

46021336 🎃 read a horror book

DCeased by Tom Taylor

I know nothing at all about this except that I think it’s Batman in a zombie apocalypse scenario? I dunno, I saw it on Hoopla and the cover looked cool. 😂

35524932. sy475 👻 read a book with Halloween colors on the cover

Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell

My mom has been asking me to check this out for a while, and while it is a full-sized novel, she said it’s a really quick read, so I thought I’d pick it up for the readathon! All I know is that it’s about some couple who goes to a secluded cabin and finds something really awful in the woods nearby, but I’ve avoided looking at reviews otherwise because I want to be surprised. Plus, the cover has black and orange!

🎃 bake or make a drink to go with your spooky read

A bit unoriginal, I know, but I drink pumpkin flavored coffee all year anyways, so even if I don’t get adventurous and bake something tasty, I know I’ll for sure at least be drinking some delicious pumpkin coffee throughout the readathon!

Will you be participating in Summerween? If so, what’s on your TBR? Feel free to drop a link to a TBR blog post or video if you have one! 🥰
