TBR Lows & Highs #16

December 2, 2018

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

FORGIVE ME, LEONARD PEACOCK by Matthew Quick!

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it within the next 18 months.

Rules:

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
    • ALTERNATIVE OPTION: Find 5+ titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

This week’s posts:

  • Mandy added a Seanan McGuire title this week, which I am ALWAYS in favor of
  • Ari has such exciting titles in both the “highs” AND “lows”!
  • Kaya cracked me up with one of her removals—”I’m officially fixing this mess”!
  • Sionna got a Kindle Unlimited subscription and her TBR grew quite a bit!
  • Mandy added 2 of my 2018 faves this week!

(books that are LOW on my TBR—vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it within 18 months!)

1. Ghost Story — Peter Straub (owned)
2. Bird Box — Josh Malerman (owned)
3. The Long Walk — Stephen King (owned)
4. Made You Up — Francesca Zappia (owned)
5. Salt to the Sea — Ruta Sepetys (owned)

1. Somewhere Only We Know — Maurene Goo
A rom-com between a k-pop star and a tabloid reporter, with Maurene’s adorable humor? Gimme.
2. An Unkindness of Magicians — Kat Howard
I thought this was already on my TBR, but I guess not? It’s set in a version of New York where magic is fading and the only person who can save it wants to destroy it.
3. Sweet Black Waves — Kristina Perez
This is a Tristan & Iseult retelling centered on Branwen’s story. Low key had no interest until someone told me the romance is the softest thing and now I’m kind of into it.
4. Splatterpunk Forever — multiple authors (owned)
This is a splatterpunk horror anthology featuring a few authors I either like or want to check out, and it’s a charity work, and I’ve been wanting to try out the subgenre more (if you’re not aware, splatterpunk is a horror genre that typically has a lot of gore, sex, and general excessiveness).
5. Four Psychos — Kristy Cunning (kindle unlimited)
I’ve never read a reverse harem book, and have been kind of interested, so when I saw Sionna rave about it and I realized it was on KU for free, I grabbed it.

6. Unnatural, Vol. 1 — Mirka Andolfo
I honestly added this graphic novel because the art is beautiful.
7. The Beautiful — Renee Ahdieh
This doesn’t come out until next October but I am SO PUMPED because… 19TH CENTURY VAMPIRES. I really need vampires to come back into the YA spotlight, especially hist-fic ones.
8. Red, White & Royal Blue — Casey McQuiston
I’m seeing this m/m NA contemporary EVERYWHERE and it just looks so cute. Royalty, tabloid drama, secret dating, I want it all.
9. This Mortal Coil — Emily Suvada (owned)
I don’t read a ton of YA sci-fi because it can be a bit hit-and-miss for me, but after hearing Kaleena, Bex, and Taylor rave about this so much lately, I had to add it.
10. Tales from the Darkside — Joe Hill (owned)
Once upon a time, Joe wrote a re-imagining of Tales from the Darkside and it never made it to the television screen as planned, so he adapted his stories into a graphic novel, which I think is kind of awesome and resourceful.

Which book from my “lows” do you think I should add to my “top-TBR” shelf?

Ohh tough one – Bird Box is worth a read and the film is due on Netflix this month but I also really enjoyed The Long Walk.

In that case, I’ll just let you vote for two this week, haha! 😉 Thank you! I really do need to read Bird Box before the movie comes out, don’t I?!

Yay! Haha. Yessss I feel that is only right! Lol.

Ahhh I definitely vote for Bird Box!! That book was so unsettling. I rarely get scared by horror books, but that one had me on edge the entire time.

Thank you!! Are you planning on watching the movie adaptation?

      • Reply Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews December 5, 2018 at 6:28 am

Yeah, I’m suuuuper curious to see how they’re going to adapt it. I’m crossing my fingers that it lives up to the book!! The trailer seemed pretty good so I’m hopeful.

I am going to start doing this. I love it!

So many good books added to your TBR!! I will say I just finished The Dark Side series (starts with Four Psychos) and I loved it, BUT it is totally not healthy at all haha. This is one I think I have to put in the guilty pleasures column. It is dark, slightly crazy, irritating, and a ‘hell’ of a ride. heh. The author is coming out with another RH series soon and I’m so excited… although I’ll miss those four psychos haha.
I didn’t know the name of Renee Ahdieh’s vampire series, so thanks for adding it!! I’m so excited for that one to come out! Red, White, & Royal Blue is another one that seems like it will be fun to read 🙂

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 2, 2018 at 8:24 pm

Hahaha thank you for the heads up! Sometimes I’m just in the mood for a “junk food” read and that series sounded like a perfect fit for that reading mood after I saw you talk a bit about it. 🙂 And yesss, I’m super excited for the new vampire books! I need more diverse vampire stories.

girl i HATED Made You Up. like, HATED WITH MY LIFE. but it was an unpopular opinion so feel free to take that sh*t with a grain of salt. speaking of salt (hehehe….i’ll see myself out) Salt to the Sea is pretty good but imo not world-changing.

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 2, 2018 at 8:25 pm

I honestly would probably unhaul Made You Up if I didn’t own a copy that someone sent me in a twitter trade. ? I heard so many mixed reviews on it that I cringe a little when I see it on my shelf, but I refuse to unhaul it without trying it… which is how it just ends up in the “lows” of my TBR all the time. Whoops.

Omg yes me too! I didn’t even finish Made You Up! I couldn’t stand it! It was just not good oops. But I also agree that you should read Salt to the Sea (if you haven’t already because I know this is really late). My friend has loved Ruta Sepetys’ works for a while and I really want to read it for myself as well!

I loved Bird Box! And I am a huge fan of The Dark Side reverse harem series! 🙂 It’s a good one to start with if you haven’t read any RHs, but it is definitely “adult” (some are YA/NA) with some steamy scenes (not a whole lot).

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 2, 2018 at 8:26 pm

Bird Box really does sound so good, and it seems to be winning so far, so maybe that will motivate me to read it before the movie comes out! 🙂 And thank you for the heads up! I definitely don’t mind sex in books but it’s good to know what to expect going into it.

Can I give a down vote to King’s book? 😛

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 6, 2018 at 12:50 am

LMAO. Sorry, but no 😛 I hear it’s more dystopian than horror, if it’s any consolation.

      • Reply Kathy @ Books & Munches December 6, 2018 at 4:02 am

Darnnn it, haha! Was worth a shot. 😀 [I might be a bit petty but I just couldn’t not comment that since there aren’t any immediate books I’d vote on this time around, haha.]

  • Reply Kaleena @ Reader Voracious December 4, 2018 at 5:21 pm

Drop everything and read This Mortal Coil immediately. PLEASE.

  • Reply Elise @thebookishactress December 5, 2018 at 6:19 am

okay wait i’m probably late for this but my vote is going for Made You Up!!

  • Reply Sarah December 7, 2018 at 12:11 pm

Let’s do a BR of Bird Box that we’ll both put off for 3 months! 😉 I really do want to read it before the Netflix release though.
