TBR Lows & Highs #17

December 9, 2018

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

BIRD BOX by Josh Malerman!

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it within the next 18 months.

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
    • ALTERNATIVE OPTION: Find 5+ titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

This week’s posts:

  • Sionna had some pretty interesting additions this week *eyebrow waggle* ?
  • Mandy removed a ton of titles this week!
  • Lauren made the most gorgeous custom graphics for her take on the meme!
  • Ari tried something new with this week’s post!
  • Rachel added some super exciting new reads this week!

(books that are LOW on my TBR—vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it within 18 months!)

1. Truly Devious — Maureen Johnson
2. Roomies — Christina Lauren
3. The Accident Season — Moira Fowley-Doyle
4. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon — Stephen King
5. Release — Patrick Ness

I added a *LOT* this week… sorry, everyone. ?

1. Dark Cities — anthology edited by Christopher Golden (owned)
An adult horror/urban fantasy anthology including stories from Seanan McGuire, Jonathan Maberry, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kealan Patrick Burke, and more
2. Unravel — Calia Read
Dark NA contemporary romance/mystery
3. Untitled (The Gilded Wolves, #2) — Roshani Chokshi
YA historical fantasy. Book 1 was so good and that ENDING!
4. Misery — Stephen King
Adult horror/thriller about a woman who stalks her favorite author. I feel like I keep seeing it pop up lately so I finally added it.
5. My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness — Kabi Nagata
I asked for graphic novel and manga recs on GR this week and added a ton, this being the first from that list. LGBTQ+ nonfiction!
6. Wayward, Vol. 1 — Jim Zub
Adult fantasy graphic novel
7. Giant Days, Vol. 1 — John Allison
YA contemporary graphic novel
8. Fatale, Vol. 1 — Ed Brubaker
Adult horror/mystery noir graphic novel
9. Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant — Tony Cliff
YA historical fantasy graphic novel
10. Baggywrinkles — Lucy Bellwood
Nonfiction graphic novel
11. I Let You Go — Clare Mackintosh
Adult thriller about a girl trying to heal from the loss of her child as a pair of PI investigate the accident
12. Heartstopper, Vol. 1 — Alice Oseman
LGBTQ+ YA contemporary graphic novel
13. SuperMutant Magic Academy — Jillian Tamaki
YA fantasy/humor graphic novel
14. Skim — Mariko Tamaki
YA LGBTQ+ graphic novel
15. Ten Count, Vol. 1 — Rihito Takarai
Adult (NA?) LGBTQ+ manga with mental health (OCD) rep
16. The Bride Was a Boy — Chii
An adult LGBTQ+ nonfic manga about a trans woman! (HOW CUTE IS THIS COVER?!)
17. MPD Psycho, Vol. 1 — Eiji Otsuka & Sho-u Tajima
Adult horror manga
18. The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Vol. 1 — Eiji Otsuka
Adult horror manga
19. Ajin: Demi-Human, Vol. 1 — Tsuina Miura
Adult horror manga
20. Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 1 — Sui Ishida
Adult horror/fantasy manga
21. Deadman Wonderland, Vol. 1 — Jinsei Kataoka
Adult horror/sci-fi manga
22. Binti: The Complete Trilogy — Nnedi Okorafor (owned—review copy)
This is a bind-up of the 3 Binti novellas (which are adult sci-fi novellas with own-voice black/African rep!), plus an extra short story never before published, and it releases from DAW Books in February 2019!
23. Clouded By Envy — Candace Robinson (owned—review copy)
This is a YA fantasy novella releasing in February. Huge thanks to Candace for reaching out and offering me an ARC! ♥ It has fae-like creatures and family curses, and sounds super cool.
24. The Playing Card Killer — Russell James (owned—review copy)
An adult thriller about a man who has nightmares about murder victims, but then the victims start turning up on the news.
25. Black Wings — Megan Hart (owned—review copy)
An adult paranormal fantasy about a little girl who’s gifted and has a raven for a best friend. I think this author is already really well-known for romance books, but it’ll be my first book by her.
26. Wilder Girls — Rory Power
A YA mystery novel that is being marketed as a feminist Lord of the Flies retelling!
27. His Cocky Valet — Cole McCade (kindle unlimited)
I adored my last Cole McCade read, Over and Over Again, and when I found this in a missed Goodreads rec (from FREAKING TALIA HIBBERT herself, I DIED), I realized I hadn’t read anything else by Cole since then! It’s a new adult contemporary and features a BDSM m/m romance.
28. The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride — Kati Wilde (kindle unlimited)
This is another KU romance I was recommended, and I’m told it’s super feminist and lovely! It’s a fantasy about a man who’s expected to take on an arranged marriage, but he rejects her because he doesn’t want to violate her consent, and then they end up falling in love, anyways, I think.
29. Creatures of Want and Ruin — Molly Tanzer
This is a historical dark fantasy, I think? I just keep seeing it everywhere and hearing that it’s really well-written and I love the cover.
30. Get a Life, Chloe Brown — Talia Hibbert
This isn’t expected to come out until the end of next year, but I’m just so excited about Talia being signed to Avon for a whole trilogy(!!!) that I had to go ahead and add it!
31. Iron Hearted — Jessica Bibi Cooper
This YA fae book doesn’t even have a release date as far as I know, but this fanart totally caught my eye on twitter, and then I saw on the author’s page that it’s like Pan’s Labyrinth meets Buffy, so… YES PLEASE.

32. Wild Blue Wonder — Carlie Sorosiak
This is a dark YA contemporary involving some major trauma that has happened to a girl and her family. I think it’s one of those books you’re supposed to go into without knowing much, so I haven’t read any reviews, but I know Chelsea raved about it on her booktube channel!
33. Color Outside the Lines — anthology edited by Sangu Mandanna
This anthology doesn’t have much info available besides being a 2019 release, but I know every short story is about interracial relationships and there’s an f/f Hades/Persephone retelling, which is all I need to know.

Which book from my “lows” do you think I should add to my “top-TBR” shelf?

I’m not voting because honestly, none of your lows are grabbing me? But I just saw the cover for Wilder Girls and it’s so cool!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:23 am

I looooove the Wilder Girls cover! I’ve seen similar covers before where things were cross-section cut like that (if that’s what you’d call it?), but I think Wilder Girls is easily my favorite example of that style.

Wow. You really did add a lot this week. I vote for Truly Devious. I thought it was pretty good.

I vote for Truly Devious, I really enjoyed it! And I love how many highs you have (although my TBR doesn’t LOL)

  • Reply Kaleena @ Reader Voracious December 9, 2018 at 9:07 pm

    Truly Devious!!!!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:30 am

I wasn’t expecting that one to win buuuut so far I’m pretty sure it’s going to win and I’m not mad about it!

      • Reply Kaleena @ Reader Voracious December 11, 2018 at 10:34 am

GOOD because I really enjoyed it. I will probably re-read it in early 2019 in advance of the sequel.

  • Reply Ellyn December 9, 2018 at 10:39 pm

Truly Devious is pretty good and has interesting characters but I recommend waiting until the trilogy has been completed because the trilogy is 1 mystery so book 1 ends on a cliffhanger and doesn’t solve the mystery and I’m assuming book 2 will be the same. That being said, you should read it eventually!
Ahh, Misery! I haven’t read that yet either which is crazy because it’s so popular! (*coughs* are you buddy reading it with anyone?)

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:32 am

Oooooh, I didn’t know it was a trilogy!! Thank you so much for the heads up! I allow myself 18 months to read the winners of each week’s post (because I know making myself read it within a year just… wont’ happen hahaha), so hopefully that gives me time to wait on book 3 and then I could binge read them. 😀
I’m not buddy reading it with anyone but we absolutely could give it a whirl if you don’t mind waiting a couple of months? I also don’t own it so I’ll have to get it between now and then but I’m pretty sure my library has the ebook.

      • Reply Ellyn December 11, 2018 at 7:18 am

We should totally buddy read Misery, I plan on reading it before the end of April so anytime before May suits me!

  • Reply Rachel @ Typed Truths December 10, 2018 at 1:28 am

destiny, truly devious and the accident season are sooo good!! can i totally cheat and vote for them both??
this is such a great list though. i always need graphic novel recs and so many of these look fantastic. i didn’t know that binti was getting bound up either so i may wait for that to come out before i read it?? we’ll have to see. i really need to read a cole mccade book next year too

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:33 am

Haha yesss you absolutely can vote for them both!! <3 Have you read Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moira? SO GOOD, SO QUEER.

      • Reply Rachel @ Typed Truths December 11, 2018 at 2:53 am

phew, i could NOT have chosen between the two!
not yet but !! i had no idea i was queer too. there’s a queer witchy moira book out there i havent’ read?? what am i doing with my life?? ?

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:34 am

Ugh I didn’t mean to hit enter yet, sorry! But yay, I’m glad you like the recs! I’m super excited about the Binti trilogy. And YES to Cole McCade, I honestly never stop recommending Over and Over Again because it is so freaking good. It’s so sweet and slow-burning and angsty and taboo and it has BABY GOATS. BABY GOATS, RACHEL!!!

      • Reply Rachel @ Typed Truths December 11, 2018 at 2:57 am

lol don’t sweat it. done that more times than i could count
i was saving binti for the shortathon but now i have a dilemma,,should i wait for february should i not?? oh no, decisions! ahhh
i’ve definitely seen over and over again around. when i heard age-gap and ace spec rep, i jumped on the ebook but (of course!) never got around to actually reading it. but baby goats? babY GOATS?? you’ve sold me! slow burn and sweet and asfgjfkls i’ll probably be jumping on it asap next year then!! if i can hold off for that long…

        • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 12, 2018 at 8:39 pm

I have the ebook for Binti right now, so I’m thinking about trying to read one novella for Shortathon, one in early January, and one in late January since I’m supposed to review it on… Feb 4th, I think. 😀
YES, BABY GOALS. And yes, I think the demi rep is own-voice but I can’t remember 100% for sure on that. I just know that all of the rep honestly felt SO GOOD to me. Oh and nobody talks about this but the older character is also Romani and he talks a lot about his heritage and such and it’s really lovely ♥

  • Reply Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews December 10, 2018 at 2:21 am

yay bird box!!! i hope you enjoy it when you get to it 😀 with your lows i’ve only read release but i REALLY enjoyed it. i know a lot people say they couldn’t get into it because there’s kind of a weird ghost story happening with the main story, but i really loved that part of it.
looks like you added such a great bunch of new additions too!! i LOVE giant days, it’s definitely one of my favourite comic series ever. heartstopper was adorable too!!
and thank you so much for sharing my post ?

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:36 am

Thank you! OMG, I had no idea there was a ghost story type thing in Release?? TBH I didn’t reread the synopsis before putting it in this list because I’m lazy and awful and when it came up in my random sorting on GR I was like “Oh yeah, I keep forgetting I have that so I guess that belongs.” But now I’m WAY more interested in it ?
Aww yay! I think i have vol 1-4 of Giant Days coming in to the library this week and I’m very excited. 😀 And you’re so welcome love!!

  • Reply Kathy @ Books & Munches December 10, 2018 at 4:54 am

I’m voting Roomies! Because I just got myself a copy – lamest reason ever.
And down-voting King because I CANNOT RESIST TRYING OKAY.

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:38 am

BAHAHA I almost was like “should I put King in two weeks in a row?” and then I thought, “Yes, because Kathy is totally gonna try to down-vote it again” and HAAA. Here we are. ???

  • Reply Laura Beth December 10, 2018 at 8:58 am

I’m voting for The Accident Season! That cover – Wow!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 11, 2018 at 1:39 am

Thank you for voting, friend!! Isn’t it lovely? The cover of her other book (Spellbook of the Lost and Found) is even BETTER!

  • Reply Habbisham December 11, 2018 at 9:36 am

I can’t vote this time as I don’t know those books. I really should do more of these posts for myself to help purge some of my TBR pile but I am still not organised! I am in awe of you (and some others) <3

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 12, 2018 at 10:25 pm

Aww, thank you! And that’s okay if you don’t vote, I just appreciate you reading the post either way 🙂
