TBR Lows & Highs #20

December 30, 2018

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

THE CITY OF BRASS by S. A. Chakraborty!

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it within the next 18 months.

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
    • ALTERNATIVE OPTION: Find 5+ titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

This week’s participants:

(books that are LOW on my TBR—vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it within 18 months!)

1. In the Woods — Tana French
2. Ever the Hunted — Erin Summerill
3. The Lies of Locke Lamora — Scott Lynch
4. Attachments — Rainbow Rowell
5. Legendary — Stephanie Garber

1. The Same Deep Water As You — Chad Lutzke (owned, review copy; releasing january 2019)
Adult horror/dark fiction
2. Perihelion Summer — Greg Egan (owned, review copy; releasing april 2019)
Adult sci-fi novella; unsolicited ARC—I hadn’t heard of this one but it sounds cool and I’m excited to have it now!
3. The Devil’s Dreamland — Sara Tantlinger
Adult horror/true crime poetry collection; rave review from Bex won me over on this one!
4. The Girl in Red — Christina Henry (releasing august 2019)
Adult horror/fantasy; I’m here for the Christina Henry retellings and this one sounds like an amazing post-apocalyptic take on Little Red Riding Hood ?
5. Charcoal Tears — Jane Washington (kindle unlimited)
NA paranormal/reverse harem; I’ve never read any reverse harem stories before and Sionna raved about this series!
6. Collected Christmas Horror Shorts 2 — edited by Kevin J. Kennedy (kindle unlimited)
Adult Christmas horror collection; since Christmas is over, I won’t be reading this until next holiday season, honestly, but it’s 645 pages long which is HUGE for a horror collection and I’m intrigued!
7. The Summer Palace and Other Stories — C. S. Pacat (owned)
Adult fantasy; WE FINALLY HAVE A PAPERBACK COLLECTION OF THE CAPTIVE PRINCE SHORT STORIES! *screaming forever* I’ve already read 3 of them through ebooks but it’s technically still on my “TBR” until I read the 4th one, and also, I wanted an excuse to gush about this existing.
8. Swipe Right for Murder — Derek Milman (releasing august 2019)
YA thriller; I didn’t like Milman’s debut, but I’m interested in this for the own-voice m/m rep, and am somewhat considering giving his first book Scream All Night a second try.
9. Minimum Wage Magic — Rachel Aaron (kindle unlimited)
YA sci-fi/urban fantasy WITH DRAGONS
10. The Kiss Thief — L.J. Shen (releasing january 2019)
NA/adult dark romance(???); I think Sionna put this one on my radar, and it just sounds intriguing
11. Serpent & Dove (no cover) — Shelby Mahurin (releasing september 2019)
YA fantasy; a witch/witch hunter romance ????????
12. Songs of Insurrection — J. C. Kang (kindle unlimited)
YA fantasy; DRAGONS
13. Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon (no cover) — Mary Fan (releasing june 2019)
YA historical fantasy; Chinese warrior girls and mechanical DRAGONS ?
14. Offline — Kealan Patrick Burke
Adult horror/true crime short story; mostly written via FB messages and also I just really love KPB ♥
15. Master of the Moors — Kealan Patrick Burke
Adult horror/mystery novella; werewolves, creepy moors, and KPB—what else do I really need?

Which book from my “lows” do you think I should add to my “top-TBR” shelf?

In the Woods by Tana French — not her best, but something you shouldn’t be missing out on. So good!

Thank you! By the way, what was her best read for you? I haven’t read anything by Tana at all so far!

Oh goodness! So the series does not, necessarily, have to be read in order. But, if you’re wanting to start with a true banger, I would highly recommend Faithful Place first, followed by The Secret Place and then The Trespasser.
As far as emotions and making me wanting to cry vibes going on, Faithful Place and Into the Woods have me.
As far as edge-of-your-seat interrogations, The Secret Place.

Legendary! If you enjoyed Caraval, you’ll enjoy jumping back into this world. It’s different in a way from Caraval, but I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too 🙂

Thank you, love! I actually wasn’t big on Caraval but I’m excited to see where the world goes next. 🙂

I love this post! The Lies of Locke Lamora is also on my low TBR, but hopefully I’ll get there someday.

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 9:12 am

Thank you! Fingers crossed for us both on Locke Lamora. 🙂 It sounds good and everyone seems to love it, but for some reason, I just never seem to make the time.

Legendary is one of my favorites of the year! I hope you’ll enjoy it?

Legendary! You must read it, it’s divine!!!

  • Reply MetalPhantasmReads December 30, 2018 at 5:09 pm

I would pick Legendary just because I’m curious about your thoughts on it (if it’s a better sequel than the first one). There so many books I had never even heard of before. I love that you branch out so much!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 9:14 am

I’m curious, too, honestly! I wasn’t crazy about the first book but I’ve heard so many people say the second one was way better than I’m kind of excited about it, but I never seem to actually sit down and read it lol. Aw, thank you! 😀

      • Reply MetalPhantasmReads December 31, 2018 at 7:14 pm

You’re welcome 😀 yeah I’ve been hearing that a lot and I’m starting to get to the point where I need to find out for myself lol.

I think you should move Legendary up because Finale is coming out in 2019 and what better time to catch up on the series? 😀

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 9:14 am

Ooooh, good point! I always forget that it got extended to a trilogy. ??

      • Reply Harker @ The Hermit Librarian January 1, 2019 at 2:46 pm

I have to read them all myself, tbh. I may just wait until the whole series is done before I read it. I’ve got the first two on my shelf at home, I just haven’t gotten there yet.

Legendary if you liked the first book!!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 10:20 am

I wasn’t wild about it, but I’m interested in continuing, at least!

      • Reply ✩ Ashley ✩ December 31, 2018 at 10:56 am

Maybe start new with The Lies of Locke Lamora then?! I change my vote hehe.

        • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 1:31 pm

Hahahaa okay! I don’t count the votes until the end of the week so you have time. 😉

  • Reply Sarah December 31, 2018 at 9:47 am

Not to be rude, but can I vote against Attachments? I had to DNF because the premise skeeved me out a bit and the guy started out as a slut-shamey jerk. ANYWAY, I haven’t read any of your “lows” (other than that) but I’d vote for the Tara French, since I really want to read it as well!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 10:23 am

LMAO you’re not rude, I didn’t know he’s slut-shame-y but that’s… gross ? I bought it forever ago right after reading Fangirl and loving that one, before I knew that Rainbow Rowell tends to be so problematic sometimes. So thank you for the heads-up!

  • Reply Laura Beth December 31, 2018 at 12:46 pm

I would pick Legendary! I still need to read Caraval myself, but I’ve heard good things!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 1:36 pm

Thank you for voting!! I think Legendary is going to be a pretty clear winner this week, which is good because then maybe it’ll motivate me to read it by the time Finale comes out in 2019!

  • Reply devouringbooks2017 December 31, 2018 at 6:45 pm

Move up The Lies of Locke Lamora!!!

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries December 31, 2018 at 11:49 pm

Thank you! 😀 I’m actually surprised I haven’t read that one yet with all the praise it gets!
