The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*
STILLHOUSE LAKE by Rachel Caine!
As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it within the next 18 months.
Rules:
- Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
- Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
- Find 5 titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”) OR find 5 titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
- Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
- Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
- List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)
(books that are LOW on my TBR (BUT NOT BEING REMOVED)—vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it within 18 months!)
- Of Beast and Beauty — Stacey Jay
- YA fantasy; I love a good B&TB retelling, but this one has a unique twist in that the MC is blind, and the Princesses in her world (which she is) are raised to be human sacrifices? ouch
- Traitor’s Blade — Sebastien de Castell
- adult fantasy; I’ve been hesitant to pick up this series because I heard it’s a very humorous epic fantasy, and humor in books is… very hit-and-miss for me
- The Wolf in the Whale — Jordanna Max Brodsky
- adult historical fantasy; I honestly feel like I’m going to LOVE this, but for some reason, I’ve been too intimidated to pick it up? why does this happen to me?!
- Freedom Trials — Meredith Tate
- YA dystopia; I love trial/tournament tropes, especially when DEATH is on the line! *dun dun dun*
- I’m Thinking of Ending Things — Iain Reid
- adult horror; this is such a polarizing read among my friends and that always immediately intrigues me
- Black Tattoo — Cole McCade
- adult romance; I can’t even describe how pumped I am for Cole’s new taboo m/m romance ?
- The Work of Art — Mimi Matthews (july 2019)
- adult historical romance; I enjoyed Mimi’s A Holiday By Gaslight so much that I can’t wait for this new one. An “odd” heroine and a disabled veteran hero? Yes, please ♥
- Queen Takes Knights — Joely Sue Burkhart
- adult paranormal romance; a lost vampire queen, reverse harem, and I really dig the cover. ?♀️
- Fig — Sarah Elizabeth Schantz
- YA contemporary; I was looking for good MH rep books to add to our teen collection last week and found this story about a girl’s MI and her mom’s schizophrenia
- The Lady Rogue — Jenn Bennett (september 2019)
- YA hist-fic; I have so many Jenn Bennett books on my TBR. ? I just heard “Vlad the Impaler” and added it as fast as I could (thanks Amanda ♥)
- The Stranger — Steve Stred
- adult horror; Becca’s review
- Fix Her Up — Tessa Bailey
- adult romance; Kathy’s review
- Shadowmancer — Devin Harnois
- adult fantasy; I need more queer fantasy-romances <3
- This is Falling — Ginger Scott
- new adult romance; saving this up for one of those rainy-day “I need to cry” moods, judging by the synopsis & reviews
- The Doctor’s Secret — Heidi Cullinan
- adult romance; an m/m doctor/nurse story, how cute~! Sionna’s review
- Moon Burned — H.D. Gordon
- adult paranormal fantasy; I added this 50% for the werewolves and 50% because I’m a sucker for buff women on covers
- Taming — A.K. Koonce
- adult paranormal romance; 1) dragons 2) for someone who’s never read reverse harem, I sure do add a shitload of it to my TBR
- Destined Darkness — Tessa Cole
- adult paranormal romance; 1) vampires 2) nephilim 3) see previous note 4) SO MANY OF THESE ARE SIONNA’S FAULT ???
- Unspoken — Celia McMahon (october 2019)
- YA fantasy; more werewolves!
- Fatal Harmony — Anne Malcom
- adult paranormal fantasy; more vampires! and I think this has a morally grey MC, which I love
- Touch of Regret — Autumn Reed
- adult paranormal romance; Sionna, please stop destroying my TBR (no don’t stop actually)
- Dedicated — Neve Wilder
- adult romance; a friends-to-lovers musician romance featuring two bi men ?
- The City of Lost Fortunes — Bryan Camp
- adult fantasy; the setting is post-Katrina New Orleans, which immediately intrigued me a little because I’ve never seen a fantasy novel really focus much on a real-world disaster from my lifetime, I don’t think?
- Faking Ms. Right — Claire Kingsley
- adult romance; Sam’s review
- Rites of Extinction — Matt Serafini
- adult horror; Tracy’s review
Descriptions for all items below this point can be found in yesterday’s Stacking the Shelves post!
- Permanent Record — Mary H.K. Choi
- YA contemporary
- Almost Home: Poems — Madisen Kuhn
- adult poetry
- Splinters are Children of Wood — Leia Penina Wilson
- adult poetry
- Wild and Crooked — Leah Thomas
- YA contemporary

Not gonna lie I totally started laughing when I noticed so many familiar books on your Highs haha. Should I take a break from reading RH to save your TBR? ? If you’re looking for a good place to start though, I really recommend Written by Kathryn Moon. The heroine is a library assistant, there is magic, and the relationships are pretty darn healthy.
Also, so glad Stillhouse Lake won! Probably one of my top reads so far this year.
Annnnddddd I’m definitely going to go pick up Faking Ms. Right. Thanks for helping me decide what book to read next ^_^
Totally laughing at this comment still because YES, I need you to stop making my TBR get so big! ? Kidding, but thank you for the recommendation of Written, that sounds like a great starting point!
Adding so many of these to my TBR!
I vote for Of Beast and Beauty! I remember reading it a few years back and enjoying it.
And oooh, I’ve seen so many people talking about Fix Her Up lately. Might have to go see if my library has a copy of it…
Hope you love all these books when ya pick them up! 🙂
I just finished Fix Her Up, and omg so good! Definitely a lot sexier than the cover has you believe lol
Yeah, not gonna lie, the excerpts I’ve seen have been WAY steamier than I expected! ?

stillhouse lake was so good but it has a massive tw for domestic abuse & manipulation (just fyi ?).
i’ve only read of beast & beauty from your lows but as much as i remember loving it back in the day, i do remember the blind isn’t great which was a shame. i’m super interested to hear your thoughts about the traitor’s blade because i have that on my shelves too so i’m going to vote for that!
ahhhhh, new cole mccade!! i need to catch up on his backlist but you can bet that’s going straight on my tbr
Ahhh thank you so so so much for the TW, friend! <3 <3 And that's sad about the blind rep in Of Beast & Beauty not being awesome. 🙁
As far as Traitor's Blade goes, have you read it since this comment? I haven't and honestly, that author's books have PLUMMETED on my TBR lately because someone I trust a lot told me they've read both of his popular series and that they're full of fat-shaming comments. It's really upsetting because the person who recommended his books to me is someone who I used to be friends with, who was aware of how triggering fat-shaming is for me, so it bums me out a little that it didn't seem to be worth mentioning to them, but I guess it happens. 🙁
I loved I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS!
Yesss, I thought I remembered you saying you did! I’m excited to read it! <3
