TBR Lows & Highs #51

August 4, 2019

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it within the next 18 months.

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5 titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”) OR find 5 titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

(books that are LOW on my TBR (BUT NOT BEING REMOVED)vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it within 18 months!)

  • Menagerie — Rachel Vincent [adult urban fantasy]
    • I like carnival settings, and this has been on my TBR a long time. I just always forget about it!
  • Sheets — Brenna Thummler [MG contemporary graphic novel]
    • I’ve been on a bit of an MG graphic novel kick lately!
  • My Lovely Wife — Samantha Downing [adult thriller]
    • I love the idea of this couple who’s spicing up their marriage with murder(!), plus it seems like everyone has raved about this lately.
  • Nightbooks — J.A. White [MG horror/fantasy]
    • You all know I love a good spooky MG read, and I LOVE books about books, so this seems like a win/win.
  • Kill for Satan! — Bryan Smith [adult horror]
    • To be fair, this wasn’t at the top of my TBR because it’s Halloween-themed and I was saving it, but to get my “lows” picks every week, I randomize my TBR shelf, and when this popped up in the top 5 random choices, I figured I’d let it have its turn on the meme. 😛 It’s a 97-page novella about a cult.

  • Work For It — Talia Hibbert [adult romance]
    • I can’t believe this wasn’t already on my TBR shelf, considering I’ve been obsessing over it since she first mentioned she was writing it. Her first m/m romance! *swoon*
      ✨ m/m rep, own-voice black rep, own-voice depression rep! ✨
  • Other Voices, Other Tombs — edited by John Brhel & Joseph Sullivan [adult horror anthology]
    • I liked this duo’s work in the past, but usually they’re the ones writing this stories. In this case, it’s a bunch of other authors, including a ton of my faves (like Kealan Patrick Burke). It’s also on KU, and I’m proooobably going to go ahead and start it ASAP.
  • The Bank — Bentley Little [adult horror]
    • Bentley Little was my first venture into adult horror (besides the classics), and an incredibly formative influence on my tastes in my teens, but I haven’t taken the time to check out his last few releases. When I saw this one, I had to add it to my TBR immediately, because it sounds so twisted, like his old work.
  • Sisters & Guts — Raina Telgemeier [MG nonfic graphic novels]
    • I just finished Smile and loved it so I definitely need more of Raina’s childhood stories.
  • The Fearing #2: Water & Wind — John F.D. Taff [adult horror]
    • I just read the first novella in this serialization a couple of days ago and tore through it, literally could not put it down. It’s about the end of the world, but it manifests through people’s worst fears coming true.

Descriptions for all items below this point can be found in the latest Stacking the Shelves post!

Which book from my “lows” do you think I should add to my “top-TBR” shelf?

I think you should add Sheets to your top-TBR list. It’s a graphic novel and easy to get through which means something quick to get off your TBR. Lol this is sometimes how to choose what to read next when I’m concerned about my TBR total.
I have Consort of Secrets out from KU right now…. thanks to your post last week if I’m remembering correctly hahaha.

I’ve read Sheets, but I’m still voting for The Lovely Wife since I think it sounds like a premise you’d enjoy! I’m also really happy that you’ve discovered Raina Telgemeier! I love her graphic novels!

I found My Lovely Wife in the end rather disappointing and frustratingly lacklustre. Like you, I loved the premise but the book failed to live up to its hype for me.
