TBR Lows & Highs

TBR Lows & Highs #61

October 27, 2019

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

THESE WITCHES DON’T BURN by Isabel Sterling!

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it soon!

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5 titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”) OR find 5 titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

(books that are LOW on my TBR (BUT NOT BEING REMOVED)vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it!)

  • In the Woods — Tana French [adult mystery]
    • I really want to start reading more mystery authors, and I hear Tana French is a good one to check out, but I never seem to reach for anything by her…
  • Sin and Ink — Naima Simone [adult romance]
    • Who doesn’t love a good tattooed MMA fighter hero and a taboo pairing? I just haven’t been able to borrow this one anywhere, but if it wins, I’ll finally buy the ebook.
  • The Fireman — Joe Hill [adult horror]
    • I love Joe Hill, that’s no secret, but this boi is THICC and it always intimidates me a little ?
  • An Ember in the Ashes — Sabaa Tahir [YA fantasy]
    • This series is one of those that’s so hyped, it’s reached the point of making me nervous because what if I’m the only one who doesn’t like it?!
  • The Madman’s Daughter — Megan Shepherd [YA hist-fic/horror]
    • Goodness knows we stan historical horror in this house.

  • Snuff — Bonny Capps [adult dark contemporary; kindle unlimited]
    • I don’t remember who put this on my radar this week, but it looks hella dark and I’m here for it.
  • The Twisted Book of Shadows — edited by Christopher Golden & James A. Moore [adult horror anthology]
  • 69 — Tim Meyer [adult horror novella; kindle unlimited]
    • I am, in fact, a preteen at heart, so I definitely didn’t expect to learn that this novella was a cosmic horror story featuring a shit load of elderly people. I love Tim’s work so I’m sure it’s going to be delightful.
  • Girl, Unframed — Deb Caletti [YA contemporary]
    • I’ve loved Caletti’s work ever since The Nature of Jade when I was a kid, but she has major potential to shatter all of me, so I’m nervous about this new abuse-themed story of hers.
  • Dear Universe — Florence Gonsalves [YA contemporary]
    • A story about a girl whose father is terminally ill, and the unlikely romance that forms between her and a hospital volunteer. Ow, my heart already hurts.

  • In Dreams We Rot — Betty Rocksteady [adult horror short story collection]
    • Becca gave this one a great review that made me want to pick it up ASAP! I think I’m just a sucker for NSFW AF horror.
  • Toil and Trouble — Mairghread Scott [adult fantasy graphic novel]
    • Gimme aaaallllll the witchy stories.
  • Tokyo Ever After — Emiko Jean [YA contemporary]
    • A Japanese-American girl discovers she’s secretly Japanese royalty and finds that, after years of not being “American enough”, she now isn’t “Japanese enough”.
      ✨ own-voice Japanese rep ✨
  • The Raven — Jonathan Janz [adult horror/sci-fi]
  • The Extraordinaries — T.J. Klune [YA SFF]
    • Queer teen superheroes!
✨ undetermined queer rep, queer author ✨
  • Ghost Wood Song — Erica Waters [YA paranormal]
    • Ghosts and queer kids, I can never say no ♥
      ✨ queer rep ✨

  • Out of Salem — Hal Schrieve [YA fantasy/horror]
    • Zombies, witches, and a genderqueer MC!
      ✨ queer/trans rep ✨
  • Snapdragon — Kat Leyh [MG fantasy graphic novel]
    • Eccentric old ladies masquerading as witches, queer kids… yep
      ✨ queer rep ✨
  • A Song Below Water — Bethany C. Morrow [YA fantasy]
    • A Black siren living in Portland. GIMME.
      ✨ own-voice Black rep ✨
  • The Stone of Sorrow — Brooke Carter [YA fantasy]
    • I just really like Nordic settings. ?‍♀️
  • Witches of Ash and Ruin — E. Latimer [YA fantasy]
    • “Modern witchcraft blends with ancient Celtic mythology” — I’m listening? “Bisexual MC with OCD” — YES???
      ✨ queer & MI rep ✨

  • Blood Countess — Lana Popovic [YA historical horror]
    • Inspired by Elizabeth Bathory? I think? I need.
  • Cinderella is Dead — Kalynn Bayron [YA fantasy]
    • Literally all I know about this is that it involves queer Black girls and a modern Cinderella retelling. And that’s all I need to know.
      ✨ queer rep & own-voice Black rep ✨
  • Finding Mr. Better-Than-You — Shani Petroff [YA romance]
  • The Night of Your Life — Lydia Sharp [YA romance]
    • Groundhog Day… but with a prom ?
  • The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires — Grady Hendrix [adult horror]
    • I will read anything Grady writes, especially with a title this fucking GREAT. ?
  • Crier’s War — Nina Varela [YA fantasy]
    • A typical enemies-to-lovers revenge-turned-romance story… but make it GAY AS HELL
      ✨ queer rep ✨

I’m so glad These Witches Don’t Burn won last week! I think that’s the one I voted for?

This week I’m definitely voting for The Madman’s Daughter! I binged that series so quickly and every time I see it on my shelf it makes me smile. I’m nervous to reread it though since I have such strong memories of loving it so much.
