TBR Lows & Highs

TBR Lows & Highs #63

November 10, 2019

The WINNER of last week’s “lows” vote was… *drumroll*

NEW INK ON LIFE by Jennie Davids!

I think this was the first unanimous Lows vote ever ?

As promised, I’ll now add this book to my “top-TBR” shelf on Goodreads to remind me to read it soon!

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5 titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”) OR find 5 titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

(books that are LOW on my TBR (BUT NOT BEING REMOVED)vote in the comments for which one I should move UP on my list and I’ll read it!)

For a while, I’m going to be focusing primarily on quick reads and overdue ARCs with my “lows”, because my voted TBR has gotten pretty big and has a LOT of big reads on it. ?

  • Ice Wolves — Amie Kaufman [MG fantasy]
    • I’ve had this ARC for ages and never read it, but I can get the ebook from work and it’s pretty short. I’ve never read anything by Amie outside of her work with Jay Kristoff, so I’m a bit apprehensive?
  • No Touching at All — Kou Yoneda [adult romance manga]
    • I need more queer manga in my life, even if it sometimes takes the form of clearly potentially problematic ones such as this boss/employee romance… I figure I should at least give it a chance, though?
      ✨ m/m rep ✨
  • Going Off Script — Jen Wilde [YA contemporary]
    • Queer girls fighting erasure in media, yes please!
      ✨ f/f rep ✨
  • My Sister, the Serial Killer — Oyinkan Braithwaite [adult mystery]
    • I’ve heard so much hype over this one, I have to check it out. A woman who has to pick between her lifelong crush and her serial-murdering sister? Ouch.
      ✨ own-voice Nigerian rep ✨
  • Cucumber Quest: The Doughnut Kingdom — Gigi D.G. [MG fantasy graphic novel]
    • This art just looks so cute?!

I fell down a rabbit hole of Tor.com Edelweiss catalogs for 2020 releases…

  • Ghosting You — Alexander C. Eberhart [adult romance; kindle unlimited]
    • An Atlanta-based queer author writing own-voice m/m romances set in Georgia? With ghosts?? GIMME.
      ✨ own-voice m/m rep ✨
  • Prince of Air and Darkness — M.A. Grant [adult fantasy/romance]
    • This came highly recommended to me this week. Queer faeries! Hell yeah.
      ✨ m/m rep ✨
  • Prosper’s Demon — K.J. Parker [adult horror novella]
    • A priest who specializes in effective but cruel exorcisms teams up with a scientist he doesn’t know is possessed. Ohhh, man… I’m on the list for an ARC of this closer to its date and I’m literally counting down the days because it sounds SO DAMN GOOD.
  • Flyaway — Kathleen Jennings [adult gothic/fantasy novella]
  • Out of Body — Jeffrey Ford [adult horror novella]
    • “A small-town librarian whose sleep paralysis becomes something much more” AHHHH YISS
  • The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water — Zen Cho [adult fantasy novella]
    • “A found family wuxia fantasy that combines the vibrancy of old school martial arts movies with characters drawn from the margins of history” ???
      ✨ own-voice Chinese rep ✨

  • The Factory Witches of Lowell — C.S. Malerich [adult hist-fic/fantasy novella]
  • Drowned Country — Emily Tesh [adult fantasy novella]
    • A SEQUEL TO SILVER IN THE WOOD?!?! *screams forever*
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune — Nghi Vo [adult fantasy novella]
    • Gimme aaallllll the feminist Asian fantasy, please ?
      ✨ own-voice Asian rep ✨
  • What Monstrous Gods — Rosamund Hodge [YA fantasy]
  • I Kissed Alice — Anna Birch [YA romance]
    • Queer girls playing the enemies-accidentally-fall-in-love-via-online-correspondence game, be still my beating heart ?
      ✨ f/f rep ✨
  • Acid for the Children — Flea [adult nonfic/memoir]
    • I’m actually not a huge RHCP fan, but I do love Flea and he narrates the audiobook himself, which I’m keen on.

Descriptions for all additions or “highs” below this point can be found in the latest Stacking the Shelves post!

I was going to vote for Going Off Script but then I saw the cover for Cucumber Quest and it’s so fucking cute that I’d be a terrible person if I didn’t give it my vote. Also, I didn’t realize Colleen Hoover had a new book coming out! I’m a sucker for her books.
