The NetGalley Tag!

June 7, 2018

Thank you so much to Avery for tagging me in this super fun tag! I did this one last year, but I wanted to re-do it since I know some of my answers have changed (a lot)!

RULES
¬ Link back to the tag’s creator: Kourtni at Kourtni Reads.
¬ Thank and link back to the person who tagged you.
¬ Answer the questions the best you can. If you don’t use NetGalley, you can substitute other sites or places where you get books!
¬ Tag a few people to do this too!

AUTO-APPROVED:
Who’s one author whose books you automatically want to read, regardless of what they are about?

Oh, this list just keeps growing and growing for me. Last year, my list was:
1. Sarah J Maas
2. Maggie Stiefvater
3. Jay Kristoff
4. Joe Hill
But now, I’d add to that…
5. Leigh Bardugo
6. Victoria Schwab
7. Ashley Herring Blake
8. Seanan McGuire

REQUEST:
What makes you want to request a book on NetGalley?

I’ve gotten much choosier about what I request lately, because I tend to get in over my head easily, so I no longer allow myself to give in to requesting a book based on its cover or the hype. The synopsis has to genuinely interest me, and/or it has to be an author I already know I love. Bonus points if a friend with similar reading tastes recommends it!

FEEDBACK RATIO:
Do you review every book you read? If not, how do you decide what books to review?

I do! Even if I just type out a quick paragraph or two about what I liked or disliked, it not only helps me keep track of my likes and dislikes, but it also feels wrong to read an ARC and not give any feedback at all.

BADGES:
If you could create one badge to display on your blog, what would it be for?

I’m gonna bounce off of one of Avery’s ideas and say I would like genre-based badges. I know it’s not “just one”, but I think it’d be cool to get a badge every time you review a certain number in that genre (like a “25+ fantasy titles reviewed”, etc.).

WISH FOR IT:
What’s one book that you are absolutely dying to read?

Definitely City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab for this one. I was literally a millisecond away from getting the only copy she brought to the signing I met her at back in April, and I’m still mourning the loss.

2018 NETGALLEY CHALLENGE:
What was the last ARC that you reviewed?

Oy… Scream All Night by Derek Milman. I gave it a negative DNF review because it was just awful.

    1. I just did this yesterday. 🙂 It is such a fun tag.
And I agree. I feel that you should always give feedback once you decide to request a book on Netgalley.

    1. Great tag! I think it’s smart to go by the synopsis too because otherwise we get request crazy. ??

    1. I try to not let the cover hype get to me…. but it always ended up getting me anyway xD I also try to write some feedback even if it’s only a sentence or two. It’s just easier for me to keep track and also feels like I’ve done my job ahaha.

      1. Yaaaay, please do! I’d love to read your answers. LMAO, yes. The first work of his I read was his part in The Illuminae Files (loved that entire series so much), and I wasn’t sure if it was him or Amie I was falling in love with until I started following his twitter and watching his instagram stories. His sense of humor is so funny and unique and recognizable that it made me realize it was his contribution to The Illuminae Files that I was so head over heels for. I’ve read 2 of his solo books since then and I stand by that thought!

        1. Yes! I follow him on social media and absolutely adore his humor and wit! I have the first 2 books of Illuminae here, gifted last year by a fellow blogger on my birthday. I want to pick up the final though, as I have a feeling I might read straight through 😉

    1. i’m so mad at myself for just…starting a netgalley account and not using it. laziest ever. fun post!

    1. I love your idea for Genre based badges, that way it can show people which books you like to review the most when it comes to author requests. I have only been a part of Netgallery for about a month and only have the one starter badge so far, so it would be nice to have more badges for our blogs

      1. Thank you! I just think it’d be so cool! I always forget to put my badges on my blog, but I should do that soon. I think I have a few now. I wish NetGalley did more of them. They used to do yearly challenge badges where, if you read a certain amount and reviewed them, you got an exclusive badge, but I believe 2016 is the last year they did it for.

          1. I had to pull up my badge list, because I couldn’t remember what all I had, but this is what I’ve got:
            – 100+ book reviews
            – 80% review ratio (I’ve reviewed more than 80% of my approvals)
            – top reviewer (3 or more of my reviews were chosen by the publishers to be featured reviews)
            – professional reader (I think it’s the starter badge?)
For ones I don’t have that are still available to get, I know there’s an auto-approval one for once you get auto-approved by a few publishers, and there are badges for 200+ and 500+ reviews!

            1. Ooh okay thank you so much for looking those up for me! I’ll have to start doing more reading then haha!

    1. I completely agree about the badges. I think it would be a really smart idea to do that because it just makes so much more sense??? Or, at least something along those lines in our profiles at least. I mean, not only would it be cool for us to know but, it could also make it easier for publishers if they can see straight away what books we read the most. It’s all well and good to say in our bios that we prefer to read this, this and this, but the proof is in the pudding.
I also think a diversity badge would be really cool.

      1. Yesss, exactly! I mean, imagine being a publisher and getting requests for your hottest new release, and then being able to look and see at a glance that the person has reviewed TONS of books from that exact genre – that seems like it would motivate me to approve them, if I was the one in charge, haha!

Say hello! ♥
