This week’s mini review round-up includes volumes 1-4 of a graphic novel series!
TITLE: Giant Days, Vol. 1
AUTHORS: John Allison
RELEASE DATE: November 24th, 2015
GENRE: Contemporary
AGE RANGE: NASusan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of handwringing boys, “personal experimentation,” influenza, mystery-mold, nu-chauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of “academia,” they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive. Going off to university is always a time of change and growth, but for Esther, Susan, and Daisy, things are about to get a little weird.
I’ve been meaning to read Giant Days forever, and I’m so glad I finally picked up the series! It’s not often that I get into contemporary graphic novels, but this is an exception worth making. The characters are lively and fun (especially Esther, who is naturally my little goth heart’s fave), there’s a healthy mix of diversity thrown into the cast, and the storyline is engaging while even being just a little bit suspenseful.
TITLE: Giant Days, Vol. 2

AGE RANGE: NA
I enjoyed volume 1 a lot but wasn’t sure if I was one hundred percent sold on this series until reading this volume. You can tell the creator really hit his groove a bit more here and the characters feel more fleshed-out, plus McGraw has to be one of the cutest love interests I’ve ever seen and his antics with Susan constantly cracked me up.
TITLE: Giant Days, Vol. 3

RELEASE DATE: October 11th, 2016
GENRE: Contemporary
AGE RANGE: NA
This series just keeps getting better and better. Can we please see more of Big Lindsay? She was amazing and I lovedthe little “twist” with her character—how precious. It’s funny how I feel like I have a different favorite character with each passing installment—first Esther, then McGraw, now Lindsay—but the turmoil at the end with a certain very precious and grouchy couple has me all kinds of stressed out and quickly reaching for volume 4! ?

It had been a few weeks since I’d picked up volumes 1-3, so I wasn’t sure how quickly this volume would suck me back in, but within a couple of panels, I was wondering why the heck I put the series down for even such a short amount of time as this! I missed Esther, Susan, and Daisy, even though this wasn’t my favorite volume so far (mostly because I’m quietly rioting over Susan and a certain someone being grouchy at each other).

It is refreshing to see someone do graphic novels. I should have had the guts to do this with Umbrella Academy or Deadly Class before they were picked up for TV… but I am glad you are doing it. It will be great exposure for those that think it isn’t “reading”.
Humbug to those people! Graphic novels count just as much as anything else! 🙂
Exactly and just like any genre they take their own skillset to read and read correctly. Kids thought my graphic novels class was an easy A… uh. No. Lol
This sounds like such a fun graphic novel series!! I might have to give it a try! ❤️
