Seasonal TBR Jar — Cozy & Quick Autumn

September 23, 2019

It’s time… FALL IS FINALLY HERE! Happy first day of fall, fellow northern hemisphere folks! Not only does that mean my favorite season has begun, but it’s also time for another seasonal TBR jar! If you didn’t see my last post in this series, I’ll give a quick rundown:

The seasonal TBR jar is a series idea I came up with in which, every season, I make a list of books from my owned TBR that fit the “mood” of that season! Then, throughout the next three months, I will randomly pull titles from that jar to motivate me to work on my backlist.

My summer theme categories were graphic novels/manga, romance, horror, nonfic, and a few random Kindle Unlimited titles, and these are the ones I marked off the list:

  • Goldie Vance, Vol. 2 ⭐⭐⭐
  • Aquicorn Cove ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Giant Days, Vol. 9 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Fake Blood ❌ (DNF)
  • Victor LaValle’s Destroyer ❌ (DNF)
  • Monstress, Vol. 3 ⭐⭐⭐⭐?
  • The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vol. 1 ❌ (DNF)
  • Heavy Vinyl, Vol. 1 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Made for You ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Frozen Pact ⭐⭐⭐
  • Ration ⭐⭐⭐
  • How to Manage Your Home without Losing Your Mind ⭐⭐⭐
  • The Book of the Unnamed Midwife ❌ (DNF)

My summer jar had 60 titles in total, and I marked off 13 (or 21.6%). Since I’m never aiming for 100%, that’s not bad (any percentage at all is a success at knocking some stuff off of my TBR!), but I’ve decided to try making the jar much smaller this upcoming season.

Now, for my autumn jar:

I’m keeping it simple and smaller this season: only 20 titles, and their common theme is that they’re all novellas and they all seem cozyOf course, my definition of cozy might differ from yours… to me, anything that strikes me as a “cozy” read is going to be anything either sweet, spooky, or atmospheric, and every title on this list fits into one of those categories.

(you can view my shelf with all of these titles here!)
Here’s a little key for which “cozy” category these fall into:
? sweet
? spooky
? atmospheric
  1. ? The Grief Frequency — 30pg
  2. ? Blind Date — 32pg
  3. ? Bellamy — 40pg
  4. ? Chained — 64pg
  5. ? Cleaner of Bones — 67pg
  6. ? Becoming the Dark Prince — 67pg
  7. ? Better Watch Out — 68pg
  8. ? Typhoid Mary — 73pg
  9. ? Coffee Boy — 89pg
  10. ? I Am Not Your Final Girl — 92pg
  11. ? The Girl Who Hid in the Trees — 93pg
  12. ? Pretty Marys All in a Row — 94pg
  13. ? Body of Christ — 95pg
  14. ? Kill for Satan! — 97pg
  15. ? Halloween Fiend — 102pg
  16. ? Silver in the Wood — 112pg
  17. ? Siphon — 112pg
  18. ? The Apocalyptic Mannequin — 114pg
  19. ? The (Alien) Nanny for Christmas — 123pg
  20. ? Darkling — 126pg

I really want to hear your thoughts on Coffee Boy

Okay I love that these are pretty short in length, and I feel like you’d get through a lot of them!

That’s what I’m hoping for! This is the first TBR jar I’ve made where I would honestly love to knock out the whole thing, just because it would take so many titles off my TBR and give me loads of short reviews to post hahaha!

  • Reply Kal @ Reader Voracious September 23, 2019 at 12:09 pm

The only one that is on my list is The Silver in the Wood, but I hope your TBR Jar does you right this spooky season! Also also, I just have to say I know the atmospheric emoji is a moon but I swear I spent 30 seconds thinking it was a banana and very confused lmao

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries September 30, 2019 at 11:40 pm

Haha thank you! OMG, I love that you thought it was a banana, I’m dying. That’s amazing. I have no idea what made me think to use the moon, tbf. ?

I’m new to this posts about seasonal TBR Jars and I think it’s a brilliant idea! I’ll keep my eyes out for the novellas you end up reading

Hahaha yessss! Ooooh yay, same, it’s just so lovely and I’m so ready for it. I mean it’s technically fall here but the weather doesn’t know that yet!!

It’s been raining here for over a week and we are due the end of a hurricane Wednesday (only a storm now) and it’s gone cold so I already have my hoodies and fluffy socks out……and i love it! (Not the rain, that can go away now!!!)

Thank you! I usually just aim for as many as I can but since these are so short, I would love to read every single one!

Haha you’re the only reason I added it! I actually was like “whoa, nope” when I saw the cover and title but your review for it had me so intrigued bahaha. Thank you!

Ahhh yay!! I can’t wait to read Coffee Boy now <3 and I hope you get to read Silver in the Woods soon!

  • Reply Kathy @ Books & Munches September 24, 2019 at 1:23 am

Oooh! I’m already looking forward to seeing some [probably mini] reviews on these since I haven’t heard about ANY of them and I might need more novellas in my life. Especially now that I barely have time to read two or three chapters in a row and it takes ages to finish a book, haha.

Happy.. uh.. pulling? And reading. 😉

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries September 30, 2019 at 11:45 pm

Yes, definitely mini reviews haha! I’m hoping to post a whole bunch soon as I’m rather behind on my minis… whoops…

  • Reply Brooke Lorren September 24, 2019 at 11:05 am

I’m actually not familiar with any of these, but I use your TBR Jar idea to help plan my seasonal TBRs! Except I use a random number generator because it’s easier for me.

    • Reply Destiny @ Howling Libraries September 30, 2019 at 11:50 pm

That’s awesome! Ooh… to let you in on a little secret, for my summer jar, I was too disassociated/out of the loop of things to bother making a physical TBR jar, so I just used an RNG, too. ? You’re not alone! I think I’ll make a jar some time this week for the autumn one since it’s only 20 titles and won’t be as much of an undertaking as the summer one would’ve been.
