Down the TBR Hole #32

June 3, 2018

Down the TBR Hole was originally created over at Lost in a Story, and is a super fun (and simultaneously productive) tag to help you whittle away at those never-ending TBRs! (By the way, you can click on the covers to go to the Goodreads listings!)

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current “to-read” shelf: 921 titles

BOOKS 571-575:

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao – added 04.18.17
I have this on my shelf, and I hear so many good things about it!

The Gallery of Unfinished Girls by Lauren Karcz – added 04.18.17
I was iffy on whether or not I wanted to read this when it first came out, and now, a year later, I still feel “meh” about it, so… nah.

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas – added 04.20.17
I mean… you guys know by now that I’m not removing any SJM books, right…?

The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson – added 04.21.17
This is book #2 in a series I haven’t started yet, so I’ll remove this until I read book #1!

Dragonkyn by Nathan Smith Jones – added 04.21.17
This sounds pretty average, and like nothing special, sorry. 🙁

BOOKS 576-580:

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter – added 04.22.17
Not only do most of my friends hate this book, but it doesn’t sound interesting to me from the synopsis, either.

What to Say Next by Julie Buxbaum – added 04.26.17
I loved Tell Me Three Things, so I really wanna try this!

Future Leaders of Nowhere by Emily O’Beirne – added 04.15.17
I only added this because a Goodreads friend begged me to try it, and while I still appreciate her recommendations, I just know I’m never going to get around to reading it.

Queer, There, and Everywhere by Sarah Prager – added 04.28.17
I was kinda stoked for this LGBTQ+ nonfic, but a lot of my fellow queer friends have given it “meh” or poor reviews, so I’ll trust them on this one.

The Takedown by Corrie Wang – added 04.30.17
I’m so iffy on YA mysteries, so I’ve reached the point where I just remove most of ’em.

BOOKS 581-585:

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich – added 04.30.17
I was stoked when I got this from BOTM Club because they so rarely had YA titles when I used to sub, but it’s never actually struck my interest much, and wow, those reviews…

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black – added 05.01.17
I’m not at a point in my life where I want to remove any Holly Black books.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black – added 05.02.17
^ see previous explanation.

We Slept Here by Sierra DeMulder – added 05.03.17
I honestly have soooo many abuse-themed poetry collections on my TBR that I can’t justify keeping any around that don’t particularly jump out at me.

Release by Patrick Ness – added 04.15.17
I still don’t really know what this is about, but I got it in a trade recently and want to give it a try.

BOOKS 586-590:

The Call by Peadar O Guilin – added 05.07.17
You know how sometimes you have those books you just know you’re gonna love for some reason? This is one of those for me.keepflower

The Best of Horror Library: Vol 1-5 by R.J. Cavender – added 05.07.17
I’m so torn on this one, because I read Vol 6 of Horror Library and felt SO “meh” about it, but there are some really great authors in this lineup… I think I’ll remove it for now, though.

The Ghost IS the Machine by Patrick Scalisi – added 05.07.17
This is a horror anthology that I definitely only added because it has a Joe Hill story in it, but I’m gonna remove this for now.

The Umbrella Academy, Vol 1 by Gerard Way – added 05.07.17
I totally just added this because of my neverending love for Gerard, but it doesn’t really sound like my type of story.

Menagerie by Rachel Vincent – added 05.08.17
I love dark carnival settings, and I’ve heard this is one of the best books for that!

    1. I’m the same with Holly Blacks’ books! JUST GIVE ME THEM ALLLLLLL!
I really enjoyed The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, I wasn’t really expecting anything much when I went in and then it was really enjoyable! I was surprised by it, I consider it a pleasant read…. gonna have to add it to my Re-read pile!
      Happy Reading! 😀

    1. Wow, you’re much better at being critical than I am. I usually just end up keeping most books 🙁

      1. Haha thank you! If you look at my first several posts of this meme, I kept almost everything! It’s like the longer I’ve been doing it, the more I’ve come to realize that life is just too short to keep some of these books on my TBR! 😀

        1. Very good point. I also find myself more critical now that my Goodreads TBR is over 1000… But I still keep books that I feel kind of meh about because “hey, maybe I’ll pick it up later”. 😀

    1. Hah, I started The Call a while back and then.. kicked it off my current reads because I couldn’t find the motivation to actually finish it? It does intrigue me though! I guess I simply haven’t been in the mood for it, haha.

    1. you kept three books i DIDN’T LIKE (what to say next + darkest part of the forest + coldest girl in coldtown) but that’s fine honestly and i hope they work for you better than me <3

      1. Aww noooo! I hope so ♥ I feel like it might have been you who I saw review What to Say Next recently and I legit was like, “oh man I REALLY hope that one works better for me than it did for them” because I legit loved Tell Me Three Things, buuuut at the same time I read that right when I first got back into YA after several years of only reading adult books, so like… what if it was just the timing? Ugh I overthink these things too much lmao

        1. honestly who doesn’t spend crazy amounts of time analyzing whether they should read a book before just…picking up the book

    1. I want to read Forest of a Thousand Lanterns too! Also, you need to read Darkest Part of the Forest like YESTERDAY lol!!!

Say hello! ♥
